Silver king in a couple of his friends when I throw down with some mixed media ink, prismacolor and Caran d’Ache crayon

They don’t call the tarpon a silver king for nothing because of that silver chrome like reflection, they tend to take on their surroundings

The goal was to stay loose explore and be tight in the right areas. trying to have a little fun with the color as well.

I’ll probably have another go with the same technique what would you like to see next?

Having fun laying down some Prismacolor on this swordfish portrait to keep the creative muscle stretched.

Not staying comfortable and challenging myself is an important part of growth, but also to stave away boredom

I try to let each color explain the form with its own character, but in the right location for the value needed. Swordfish have some pretty amazing blue and violet hues to exploit.

I also mixed in a little bit of the Caran d’Ache water-soluble crayon at the end

Striving for perfection is a worthwhile pursuit until it starts to restrict your ability to test the boundaries.

It took me a long time to realize perfection in my own work was being used as an excuse to stay in a comfortable place.

Growth doesn’t happen in places that are free of challenges so giving myself the permission to play around, mess things up, and fall on my face, is where the breakthrough’s happen.

fishing isn’t one dimensional and I feel the same thing for art, just like we want to explore different spots to see what might be out there. I do the same thing in my artistic pursuits.

Progress update! Made big changes to the lighting and planned for a big change to one of the characters are Marlon buddy.

I feel like I’m getting close, but my perfectionism sometimes drags things out a little longer than they should.

When that happens, I have to loosen the chains a bit and let the dogs out and I have a little fun and remember that’s why I’m doing it and not to be perfect.

That’s why it’s good to have a process that you can rely on because when the negative noise starts to crowd out having fun you have to go back to that process and trust in it to get things done!

Here’s a rough and dirty behind the scenes on the process of how I create the idea for an image. This is a piece from my upcoming series on Prey and Predator.

I start with small thumbnails about an inch to 2 inches wide and try to work out the value structure for the piece, and see which one compels me most to bring into a color comp.

I’d love to hear what you think of the piece in any other predator and pray pairings that you’d love to see in the series!
