I don’t think people realize how much their following list shapes their perception of what’s normal.
If every day you’re seeing people complain about their jobs, make excuses, chase shortcuts, or obsess over things that don’t actually matter, that starts to influence your thinking whether you intend it to or not.
The opposite is true too.
Spend enough time around people who are building businesses, investing, solving problems, learning new skills, and taking ownership of their lives, and eventually those behaviors start to feel normal.
I’ve always been a big believer in proximity. The people around you influence your standards, your ambitions, and the decisions you make.
Today, a lot of that proximity is digital.
Your following list is a reflection of the conversations you’re inviting into your life every single day.
And over time, those conversations have a way of becoming your reality.

When you’re building and winning, it can draw ire from people you know and people you don’t.
Constructive feedback from someone who is looking out for your best interest is not the same as jealous hate.
Consider the source and just know that you will never be hated on by someone actually doing more than you.
Second place focuses on the competition.
Winners focus on winning.

The conversation around AI is usually focused on what it can do.
I’m much more interested in what becomes more valuable because of it.
When everyone has access to the same tools, the advantage shifts to leadership, judgment, trust, customer experience, and building great teams. Those are the things that create businesses people come back to year after year.
Technology will keep changing. Human relationships are still one of the strongest competitive advantages you can build.
One of the things I’ve learned through The Veteran Fund is that some of the strongest founders don’t come from traditional startup backgrounds.
A lot of them come from the military, where they spent years leading teams, making decisions under pressure, managing complex operations, and solving problems with limited resources.
The challenge isn’t whether those skills translate to business. The challenge is helping other people see the connection.
When we evaluate founders, we’re looking far beyond résumés. We’re looking at leadership, resilience, adaptability, and the ability to execute when things get difficult. Those are the qualities that build great companies, regardless of where someone started their career.
That’s one reason I love investing in veteran founders. They’ve already spent years proving they can perform when the stakes are high.

Some of the biggest opportunities in my life started with a problem most people would have ignored.
A cupcake concept that didn’t exist yet. A mailbox business most people never thought twice about. Opportunities usually don’t show up looking obvious.
That’s one reason I pay so much attention to everyday frustrations. When enough people share the same problem, there’s often a business opportunity hiding inside the solution.
