The United States acquired its land by stealing it from the native Americans, through tricks, subjugation, and outright slaughter; read "Black Elk Speaks" or research Wounded Knee Massacre, to get a taste of that era. We then grew our economy by the use of subjugated African Peoples to plow our fields and pick our cotton, read Uncle Toms Cabin to understand more. Then we used jim crow laws to undermine the liberties that black Americans had to that point achieved post-1865, read "Devil in the Orage Grove", it will blow your mind.
As the country became more racially mixed towards the middle of the 20th century the prison system and set of laws targeting minorities took the place of jim crow and slavery. In the ultimate coup d'etat the white majority spearheaded by the republican party subjugated entire minority generations to a "legal" prison system, robbing innumerable children of their fathers and locking in generational poverty along with the deleterious knock-on effects such as violence and drug use, which were then used to justify their law and order policies. More recently the prison system has been going private, again with mainly republican support along with laws being written to ensure the prisons stay full and profitable, with prisoners being referred to as "honey pots".
The struggle for equal rights for all people will go on long after these protests fade into our memories. The change which we strive might still take generations, yet one way to expedite that change is to VOTE and vote with knowledge and information. Vote in the midterms and vote in the general elections. VOTE

As the CEO of the Elastic Mind Project I have taken a few years off to start a family. Now that we have a beautiful young son it is time to get our feet back into using the EMP to further the elevation of poverty and suffering around the world.
This year we are launching a joint venture with Fundación Proyecto Fábula based in Colombia. It is run by a women who uses technology to the fullest extent by reading to children in schools around Colombia. In many of these town the children do not have access to books and this is the only time they can get access to stories and the invaluable reading time that comes along with that. This program dovetails exactly with the fundamental goals of the EMP and we look forward to helping her to expand her project.
We will begin to fundraise this year for the Fundación Proyecto Fábula so stay tuned!

One of the questions that always came to our mind when we were working in Colombia, is would it be better to just give the money away instead of going through all the trouble to develop the programs. Without a question there are some real benefits to developing pedagogic programs focused on one aspect of life, but growing research is showing that simply giving money away actually improves their lives potentially more. Check out this podcast by planet money to learn more about the idea.

"In two new studies, Harvard economist Raj Chetty and his colleagues found that where poor kids grow up has a huge effect on how much money they earn as adults."
Where Poor Kids Grow Up Makes A Huge Difference Poor kids who moved to neighborhoods with less poverty did much better than those who didn't move.
