Found this little guy…a Leatherback sea turtle…ensured had a safe journey from the beach to the ocean

Leatherback turtles are named for their shell, which is leather-like rather than hard, like other turtles.

They are the largest sea turtle species weighing in at between 550 and 2,000 pounds with lengths of up to six feet. They are one of the most migratory turtles, crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Although leatherback populations under U.S. jurisdiction have increased in size since 1970, worldwide their numbers are declining. In 1980 there were over 115,000 adult female leatherbacks worldwide. Now there are less than 25,000

Relatives of modern leatherback turtles have existed in relatively the same form since the first true sea turtles evolved over 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period
