๐ Congratulations to China Medical System Holdings Limited for the approval of silevimig, a bispecific antibody for passive immunization against rabies!
Chinaโs NMPA has approved the novel drug silevimig, the worldโs first fully human bispecific antibody targeting dual epitopes of the rabies virus. It demonstrates broad neutralization, which can effectively neutralize different viral strains or genotypes of RABV, providing immediate protection.
Silevimig works by targeting the viral envelope glycoprotein (G protein) of RABV and blocks its interaction with host receptors by binding to epitopes I and III. Through this mechanism, silevimig specifically neutralizes the RABV prior to the establishment of full protection by active rabies vaccination.

A recent review by University of Michigan researchers examines the growing role of AI and machine learning in multi-objective antibody design and optimization.
Besides antibody affinity, successful antibody development involves balancing multiple properties like specificity, stability, aggregation, polyreactivity, immunogenicity, and developability. Optimizing one parameter can hinder the development of another, making the identification of clinically suitable candidates a time-consuming process.
The review highlights emerging approaches such as:
โข AI/ML-guided co-optimization across multiple antibody properties
โข Deep sequencing and antibody sub-libraries for broader sequence-space exploration
โข Computational prediction of co-optimal variants without sub-library generation
โข Energy-based and interpretable ML models for humanization and developability optimization
โข Proof-of-concept strategies for de novo antibody design

A new study from KAIST researchers introduces โextrabodyโ, an optogenetic, stimulus-gated antibody platform that brings spatiotemporal control to antigen recognition.
Extrabody is based on split antibody fragments (derived from nanobody or scFv) that remain inactive until triggered. Upon blue light or small-molecule inducers, the fragments reassemble, enabling inducible extracellular antigen recognition.
At Biointron, weโre excited to see how innovations like this push antibody discovery toward more dynamic, data-driven design.

A new study led by The University of Osaka introduces immune-induced TCR-like antibodies (iTabs), and their potential role in controlling antigen-specific immunity.
During normal immune responses, the body can generate antibodies that recognize peptideโMHC class II complexes, much like T cell receptors (TCRs) do. These iTabs can:
โข Block TCR recognition of antigen-presenting MHC-II
โข Selectively suppress antigen-specific CD4โบ T cell responses
โข Reduce autoimmune disease progression in a mouse model
This opens up a potential new strategy for precision immune modulation: using specifically designed peptides to lower harmful immune responses without broadly suppressing immunity.

Immune-induced TCR-like antibodies regulate specific T cell response in mice - Nature Communications Here, the authors investigate whether antibodies specific to the antigen peptide-MHC class II complex are generated during the immune response and whether these antibodies can limit hyperimmune responses. We are excited to announce that Siyu Sun, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher at Synapse Research Institute, has been selected as Biointronโs Q2 2026 Travel Grant recipient!
๐ Dr. Sun will be presenting at ISTH Congress (July 11โ15, 2026), on: Targeting fibrin fiber lateral expansion remodels clot mechanics, contraction and fibrin-dependent thrombin protection
Dr. Sunโs research centers on thrombin, platelets, and fibrin in blood clot formation. She contributes to the development of novel antibody-based therapeutic strategies for thrombotic and bleeding disorders, and is involved in the development of a new high-throughput method to asses thrombin generation to redefine the blood cell contributions to the clotting process.
