Where the Wild Things are was definitely one of Maurice Sendak's most popular book (Actually, I prefer the E.T.A. Hoffman Nutcracker that he did the pictures for, shh...), but did you know that wasn't the original title. Where the Wild Horses Are was. His editor loved that title,, but, the problem was that Sendak couldn't draw horses (or any animals), but, he could draw what would become the world famous 'wild things'. Those 'wild things' were based on his relatives who like the wild things had crazy hair and nose hair and all that. And, something that I hadn't known until I found it out during this Did You Know's research, Sendak was gay. Although he didn't come out to the world until he was older, he did have a partner of 50 years, Eugene Glynn, who predeceased him by a few years.
