With recent rains, toads like the Arizona toad are becoming more common in many areas, while the more dangerous Sonoran Desert toad can also appear. To differentiate between them, the Sonoran toad is notably greener, whereas the Arizona toad is brown and lumpier.

If you find a toad and your dog shows symptoms like frothing, gagging, or vomiting, immediately rinse their mouth with water for 10-20 minutes, ensuring to wash from the back to the front. This helps remove toxins and activates their adrenaline, which can counteract the effects of the poison.

After rinsing, engage your dog in an activity they enjoy, as this can further stimulate their recovery. If your dog has come into contact with a Sonoran toad, act quickly, as the situation can be critical. There’s no antitoxin available, so washing their mouth out is essential to minimize venom absorption.

Always check your yard for toads before letting your dog out at night or use a leash to keep them safe. Your vigilance is key to protecting them!
