Trust with students is rarely built through one big conversation. More often, it grows through small, consistent moments.
Remembering a student’s name. Following up after a difficult day. Being present in the hallways, cafeteria or classrooms. Listening closely—and doing what you said you would do.
Each interaction shows students: You matter. I remember. You can trust me.
What is one small way you build trust with students?

A strong school counseling program begins with clear communication.
Do students know who their school counselor is—and how to reach them?
Does staff understand when and how to make a referral?
Do families know what services and support are available?
Establishing these pathways early helps students access support more easily and gives staff and families a clearer understanding of the school counselor’s role.
Whether it’s introducing yourself in classrooms, sharing referral information with staff or communicating available services with families, each step helps create a more connected school community.
What is one way you introduce your counseling program at the beginning of the year?

Before asking, “What’s wrong with this student?” pause and ask:
“Does this student feel like they belong?”
Behavior can tell us that a student is struggling—but it does not always tell us why.
They may be entering an unfamiliar environment, struggling to connect with their peers, carrying challenges from outside of school, or still searching for an adult they feel safe turning to.
That’s why belonging matters.
When students feel seen, respected, and accepted, they’re more likely to trust, communicate, and engage.
School counselors help create that sense of belonging one relationship at a time—through a welcoming space, a familiar face, a thoughtful check-in, or simply reminding a student: You have a place here. 💙

One of the best parts of AzSCA each year is our annual conference—and it all starts with this committee.
The Conference Committee plans and executes our always-popular AzSCA Conference every February, from selecting speakers to coordinating activities and every detail in between.

The Outreach & Advocacy Committee promotes the mission and vision of AzSCA through networking, member relations and recruitment, and events. The committee also develops and shares AzSCA's talking points to advocate on behalf of our profession with stakeholders, including local and state legislators.

There are students to welcome, schedules to navigate, programs to prepare, emails to answer—and somehow, everyone already needs “just a minute.”
As the new school year begins, remember: You do not have to accomplish everything on the first day.
Start with connection.
Create a space where students feel welcome.
Take the next most important step.

It always starts the same way...
“Do you have a minute?”
Sometimes that minute turns into five.
Sometimes it turns into an entire class period.
And sometimes it becomes the conversation a student remembers long after they’ve left your office.
School counselors know that some of the most meaningful moments aren’t the ones on the calendar.
They’re the unexpected conversations where a student finally feels ready to ask for help, celebrate good news, or simply know someone is there to listen.
Here’s to every school counselor who knows that “just one minute” is often exactly what a student needs.
