Defenders of Animals at Risk (DAR) Foundation is a 100% volunteer ran non-profit dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned, mistreated, and neglected animals in Mexico. We are the U.S.-based sister organization of Fundación DAR, a cat and dog shelter located in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico. ❤️ After more than five years of waiting, Katy has finally found her forever home. ❤️
When Katy arrived at our shelter in March 2021, she had been abandoned and left tied to a tree overnight. Despite such a heartbreaking start, she never lost her loving spirit.
For more than five years, the shelter was the only home she knew. She watched other dogs leave while she continued to wait patiently for her chance.
Today, Katy has a family of her own, a warm bed, and a future filled with love. Seeing a long-term resident finally go home is one of the most rewarding moments in rescue. It reminds us that it is never too late for a happy ending.
As we celebrate Katy, we also think of the many dogs still waiting.
Sadly, most of our dogs have spent years in the shelter, still hoping for a family to call their own. Katy's story proves that even after years of waiting, the right family can come along and change everything. Miracles can happen.

🐾 PAWS & FACTS 🐾 — Do dogs dream?!
Yes, your dog is dreaming. 🥹 That little paw twitch. That sleepy woof. That frantic leg-paddling going absolutely nowhere. Your dog isn't just napping — they're off on a full adventure in their sleep! 🐶
Studies show that dogs go through the same sleep cycles as humans, including REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep — the stage where dreams happen. And just like us, they seem to dream about their daily experiences: the walk they went on, the dog they met at the park, the game of fetch that ended too soon.
Smaller dogs tend to dream more frequently, while larger dogs have fewer but longer dreams. Puppies and older dogs dream the most of all — their brains are working overtime processing everything.
So next time your dog makes those little sounds in their sleep, just know: they're living their best life, even with their eyes closed. 💙 Tag someone whose dog is a world-class napper!

🐾 Before you buy a dog — please read this.
Go to a shelter. Walk through it slowly.
You'll see them. Some will rush to the front of their kennel, tails wagging, eyes bright — still hopeful. Still believing that today might be the day. Others won't even lift their heads. They've stopped expecting anything. The hope has been replaced by something quieter, and much harder to watch.
But they are the lucky ones.
Because somewhere outside those walls, right now, a dog is sleeping on concrete. Hungry. Alone. Afraid. Not knowing if tomorrow will be any different from today. These are the ones who never made it to safety — the ones still waiting on the street, wearing down slowly under the hunger, the fear, and the loneliness.
When you adopt from a shelter, you don't just give a dog a home. You free up a space. And that space means one more dog from the street gets a roof, food, and a second chance.

Maverick has a family now! 😍♥️
Maverick was abandoned on the street when his owner moved away — left behind with no food, no water, and no explanation. Just loyalty to someone who wasn't coming back. That's how he came to us.
And then something rare happened.❣️
Maverick, a big, high-energy black Doberman mix, found his forever home in about six months. Six months. For context: most of our dogs wait years. Some wait their entire lives. Adoption is never guaranteed, no matter how beautiful, loving, or deserving a dog is. That's just the reality of rescue.💔
That's why Maverick's adoption isn't just a happy ending, it's a small miracle. And we are over the moon for him. 😍

🐾 PAWS & FACTS 🐾
That head tilt. You know the one. 🥹
It gets us every single time — but did you know there's actual science behind it?
Dogs are constantly trying to understand us. They adjust their hearing to catch every word, read the emotion behind our voice, and even shift their angle to get a better look at our expressions. That little tilt? Pure focus. Pure love.
And the sneaky part — they've definitely worked out that it makes us go completely weak at the knees. Which, let's be honest, usually ends in extra treats. They've got us completely figured out. 🦴😄
Every dog in our shelter has this same beautiful capacity to connect, to love, to pay attention to every little thing you do. They just need someone to do it for. 🐶❤️

🐾 THEY ARE STILL WAITING. 💔
These 12 dogs have been with us for 4 to 7 years. 😥
Most of them arrived in critical condition: neglected, abused, starving, discarded. Some came to us as tiny puppies who had already seen too much of the worst of humanity. We nursed them back to life. We gave them safety. We gave them love.
And then they grew up here. Inside our shelter walls. Without a family. Without a home. Without someone to call their own. 💔
They have never known a couch to curl up on. Never had a human waiting for them at the door. Never experienced what it feels like to be truly, unconditionally loved at home.
They didn't choose this life. They survived the worst of it, and they deserve so much more than what's left of it.
Every day they wait. They watch other dogs leave with their family. Every day they hope that maybe — just maybe — today is their day too.

❤️ Choco Needs a Loving Home
🐾 He was three months old. He had a broken leg, an infection, and no one coming for him. By the time rescuers reached him, the leg could not be saved. But everything else — the spark, the warmth, the will to love — every bit of that survived.
That was 2022. He's been at the shelter ever since. Still waiting. Still joyful. Still choosing people, even after everything.

Why do dogs like to eat p**p?! 🤔💩
Okay, we know — not the most glamorous topic. But it's one of the most googled dog questions out there, so let's talk about it!
The behavior is called coprophagia, and it's actually more common than you'd think. It usually comes down to instinct, boredom, or a nutritional gap in their diet. Puppies especially love to explore everything with their mouths — yes, everything.
If it becomes a regular habit though, a vet visit is worth it. Sometimes the body is simply missing something it needs.
Knowing your dog's behavior is part of being a great pet parent — and great pet parents are exactly who our shelter babies need. 🐶💖

💖🐾 HAPPY ADOPTIONS! 🐾💖
Four of our babies found their forever homes — and we could not be happier! 💖
Most of the dogs and cats in our shelter arrive with a history of severe neglect, abuse, starvation, and untreated medical conditions. Many are born on the streets, while others are abandoned when they become sick, injured, or simply no longer wanted.
But our work doesn't stop at saving and rehabilitating them. The end goal is always to find them the loving home they deserve.
And now, four of them found exactly that. We would like to thank these amazing people for giving these precious souls a loving home. 🧡
Adopting a shelter animal saves not only that one life — it gives us the chance to save so many more.
