🐾 Paws & Facts: When your dog hears a siren and suddenly becomes a wolf. 🐺

One minute it's a quiet evening. A siren passes in the distance, and your dog throws their head back and lets out a long, dramatic howl. Thousands of years of evolution, right there in your living room. 🐶

Howling goes all the way back to wolves, who used it to communicate across long distances to locate pack members, warn of danger, or call everyone together. Dogs inherited this instinct and still use it for similar reasons: to respond to sounds that resemble howls (like sirens or music), to signal their location, or to express loneliness and emotion. 😩

Some breeds are much more vocal than others. Huskies, Beagles, and Bloodhounds, for example, are practically professional howlers. But any dog can catch the howling spirit when the mood strikes. 🥴

If your dog howls when left alone, it may be a sign of separation anxiety and worth exploring with a trainer. But the occasional dramatic siren response? That's just your dog staying in touch with their inner wolf. 😄

Heat stress can quickly progress to heat exhaustion and, if left untreated, to life-threatening heat stroke. Recognizing the warning signs early can make all the difference.

Paws & Facts: You have a shadow. A furry one. 🐶

Bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, back to the kitchen. Your dog is right there. Every. Single. Time.

You sit down. They sit down. You get up. They get up. You're never truly alone again. ❤️

This is what dog lovers call a "Velcro dog," and it's rooted in thousands of years of living alongside humans. Dogs are pack animals, and you are their pack. Staying close to you feels safe, comforting, and completely natural.

There's also a practical reason. Your dog has learned that being near you often leads to good things like food, walks, playtime, treats, or cuddles. From their perspective, following you is a pretty great strategy! 😄

For most dogs, this behavior is perfectly healthy. If your dog becomes extremely distressed whenever you're out of sight, it may be worth talking to your veterinarian or a qualified trainer about separation anxiety. But for the vast majority of dogs, they simply love being close to their favorite person. 💙

Is it too hot for your dog? ☀️🐶

Many people don't realize that heat affects dogs differently depending on their size, breed, age, and health. A temperature that feels comfortable to us can quickly become dangerous for our furry companions.

Flat-faced breeds, puppies, senior dogs, overweight dogs, and those with heart or respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness. High humidity, direct sunlight, and exercise can also increase the risk.

Always choose cooler morning or evening hours for walks, provide plenty of fresh water and shade, and keep outdoor activities short on hot days.

Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or inside a parked car. Without shade and fresh water, dogs can overheat quickly. Even with the windows cracked open, a parked car can reach life-threatening temperatures in just minutes.

Watch for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool area, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

A little extra caution can save a life. ❤️

🐾 Paws & Facts: Your dog is out here grazing again. 🌿

You take them outside for a nice walk, and suddenly they drop their head and become a little cow. 🐄🐶

Every dog owner knows this moment, and most of us have wondered: should I be worried?

In most cases, no. Grass eating is completely normal dog behavior. Some dogs do it to soothe an upset stomach. The grass can trigger vomiting and help them feel better. Others simply enjoy the texture or taste, especially in spring when the grass is fresh and green. Some researchers believe dogs instinctively eat grass to add roughage to their diet.

What to watch for: if your dog is eating grass obsessively, seems unwell, or vomits frequently afterward, it's worth a trip to the vet. Also make sure the grass they're munching on hasn't been treated with pesticides or herbicides. 🌿

Tito has found his forever home, and we couldn't be happier! 💖

Like so many of the dogs and cats at our shelter, Tito came from a difficult beginning. Most of our rescues have endured neglect, abuse, starvation, untreated medical conditions, or were simply abandoned when they needed help the most.
Rescuing them is only the beginning. Our greatest hope is to see every one of them leave the shelter and start a new life with a loving family.

Today, Tito's dream came true. 🧡 A heartfelt thank you to his wonderful adopters for opening their hearts and giving him the life he deserves. Every adoption changes a life and creates space for us to rescue another animal in need.
