WHO HERE LOVES TRAFFIC TICKETS???
Our small group of two lawyers resolve probably 15 to 25+ traffic tickets a month, on average. At least half are usually CDL (truck drivers, stricter rules). One thing that makes me cringe is walking into Court, and seeing people with a ticket AND prior points on their record, trying to handle without a lawyer.
Yes, you may get lucky 1/4 of the time (perhaps slightly higher if you're extra polite) and work out a deal when they call you up there..... Or, your girlfriend/wife/daughter/mother might get sick, and suddenly you miss Court. No big deal, right? Actually, that's an AUTOMATIC License Suspension. Drive WHILE suspended and they may even try to throw jail time at you. (Also, beating the ticket is no guarantee that your Suspension disappears.)
COUNTRYMEN. LADIES. I know an easier way. Spend 15 minutes on the phone or Messenger with me. Let my office process your payment (phone works for that as well). Then, you DON'T need to come to Court, or worry, or do anything until my number pops up and I tell you "I handled it."
Don't drive like a speed child without Irak on speed dial. (I don't think speed dial is even a thing anymore, actually. Whatever, I'm still funny.)
Do you have a criminal record? If so, keep reading for important information...
DID YOU KNOW:
A 2016 Northwestern University study found that:
(A) Stunningly, 1 out of 3 American adults has been involved with the criminal justice system and has a criminal record that follows them, even if they were NOT found guilty of any crime.
(B) Almost HALF (49%) of black males in the U.S. are arrested by age 23 (compared with only 38% of white males). And, the study shows, black males with criminal backgrounds are unfairly judged MORE HARSHLY by potential employers.
(C) Almost 9 OUT OF 10 of the study participants reported stigmatization, including being BLOCKED FROM JOBS, because of their criminal records.
Clearly our system needs fixing, and fast. There's no excuse whatsoever for committing a crime--but once you've satisfied your sentence, it is NOT FAIR for your past to follow you like your shadow, eliminating your chances of success and fulfillment wherever you go.
HOWEVER--if you have a criminal record in the State of Indiana, keep reading and don't panic just yet.
In Indiana, we have the "Sealing and Expanding Conviction Records" law under I.C. 35-38-9. This law has allowed many thousands of people to seal and "expunge" their criminal records away from public view, and DESTROY THE STIGMA associated with having paid the price for bad behavior in your past.
If you were convicted of a Misdemeanor in Indiana more than 5 years ago, or a Felony more than 8 years ago - and your record has been clean ever since - then there is a STRONG POSSIBILITY you qualify for expungement of your criminal record under this law.
