America is to cars what Finland is to saunas.

Sunset and Sauna go hand in hand. Like milk and cookies or peanut butter and jelly or Boy bands and the 90s or Idaho and Potatoes.

Nothing like post sauna zen and Gods daily gift of earth peace.

You got to have the option for the steam!! New research just confirmed what every seasoned sauna bather already suspected: Steam (löyly) isn't just for atmosphere.

A study from the University of Jyväskylä and KIHU (Finland's Institute of High Performance Sport), with measurement infrastructure from Harvia, did something no sauna study had done before — tracked the room and the body at the same time, at the same precision. 50 adults, four 10-minute sessions each, six sensors per sauna, swallowed core-temp capsules, continuous heart rate.

What they found:

🔥 Heart rate rose an average of 41.6 bpm — roughly a moderate workout, from sitting still.
💧 Humidity independently drove that response, separate from temperature. Every extra percentage point of RH added ~0.37 bpm; every extra °F added ~0.8 bpm.
📊 A dry session vs. a steamy one at the same temp can differ by ~15 bpm.
🌡️ Thermostat ≠ reality. Saunas set to 167°F averaged ~140°F measured — 124°F at bench level, 156°F at head level.

The takeaway for the rest of us: if you're using sauna for recovery or cardiovascular benefit, how much water you throw on the rocks is a real variable, not a preference. Steam is part of the dose.
