If you're a hardware OEM right now, this question isn't theoretical anymore.

Memory prices up more than 50% in a single quarter. Suppliers confirming allocation, and pricing, only after your purchase order is placed.
Analysts saying meaningful relief won't come until late 2027 at the earliest.

In that environment, being lean has a different risk profile than it did two years ago.
A just-in-time strategy that worked perfectly in a stable market can become a production stoppage in this one.

We're seeing more OEMs make the uncomfortable decision to carry more inventory than they'd like, lock in longer-term commitments earlier than feels comfortable, and pay a premium now to protect continuity later.

It's not elegant. But it's practical.

The companies that will be most exposed in the next 18 months aren't the ones that chose resilience over cost.
They're the ones that didn't make a conscious choice at all and got caught flat-footed when allocation dried up.

So, the real question isn't resilience vs. cost optimization. It's whether you've made a deliberate decision about where you stand.

Where is your organization leaning right now — and what's driving that call?

The best time to involve your contract manufacturer is earlier than you think.

By the time a product reaches manufacturing, most of the decisions that affect cost, timeline, and supply chain have already been made. Component selections are locked. Tooling is designed. And if something doesn't work, you're looking at costly redesigns and delays.

At GMI Solutions, our NPI team gets involved before any of that is set in stone. Launch engineers review designs for manufacturability. Sourcing specialists vet components for availability and risk. Project managers align every moving piece, so nothing falls through the cracks.

The result is a launch that actually goes to plan.

Years ago, a global Fortune 500 medical device company came to our facility to conduct a manufacturing process control audit.

They weren't just checking boxes.

They went deep:
▪️quality systems,
▪️process controls,
▪️how we build device history records,
▪️how we manage traceability, down to the operator and the timestamp.

At the end of it, they asked us something we didn't expect.

Would GMI Solutions be willing to let them use our system as their gold standard?

Not as a case study. Not as a reference. As the benchmark they hold other suppliers up against.
When a new supplier checks "excellent" on their self-assessment for manufacturing process controls, our customer compares that supplier's process controls to ours.

That's what ISO 13485:2016 actually means in practice.

Not a certificate on the wall. Not a checklist you survive once a year.
It's the system you build over decades. Device history records that can answer a recall question in minutes, operator-level traceability on every unit, process controls tight enough that a global medical OEM trusts them more than their own.

If you're evaluating contract manufacturing partners and compliance is non-negotiable for you, let's talk.

Not all contract manufacturers are the same.

Most are brought in to execute manufacturing processes after all the key decisions have been made. We do things differently.

GMI Solutions' dedicated NPI team partners with customers from the start, reviewing designs for manufacturability, building supply chains that can handle real-world disruptions, and managing the full launch process so our customers can focus on what they do best.

It's not just about building the product. It's about making sure the product can be built efficiently, consistently, and at scale.

We put together a look at how our NPI team makes that happen.

If you're planning a product launch, this one's for you. Link in the comments. 🔗

Why Every Screw Matters

We tell our production team the same thing every day: every bolt you put in is mission critical. It has to be the right part.
It has to be torqued correctly. It has to be perfect.

Because someone's life depends on it.

The devices we build go into cancer treatment systems, portable X-ray machines, surgical robotics.
When something fails in the field, a patient's radiation therapy gets interrupted.
A recovery timeline extends.
An outcome changes.

There's no "close enough" in this building.

That's not a tagline. It's why we track every component through every production step. It's why every operator logs into every build. It's why when something goes wrong, and in manufacturing sometimes it does, we can answer any question about any unit we've ever built, down to who made it and when.

When you truly understand what's on the other end of your work, quality stops being a metric you manage.
It becomes something you can't turn off.

At GMI Solutions, DfM is in our DNA, and nothing illustrates that better than how we approach and solve problems.
A large medtech OEM came to us with a complex surgical robotics program and a challenge:

▪️ They were resource-constrained
▪️ Had no testing protocols developed
▪️ Had no fixture to run them

They didn't know exactly what tests were going to need to be run at all.
Most contract manufacturers would have waited for the OEM to figure that out. We didn't.

Our senior manufacturing engineer worked weekly with their R&D team to determine what components were needed, what software would drive the system, and how to build a test bench that could simultaneously simulate two interdependent subsystems, including managing two different voltages in a single fixture.

When the early testing approach turned out to be error-prone and too slow for production, she flagged it herself and drove the redesign.
That's not a unique story at GMI Solutions. That's just Tuesday.

For high-mix, low-volume medical device manufacturing, the margin for error is low and the complexity is high. You need a partner that comes to the table with solutions, not just screwdrivers.

Occasionally, companies come to us after a launch didn't go the way they planned.

Late deliveries. Supply chain surprises. A design that looked great on paper but created real headaches on the production floor.

It's more common than it should be — and almost always preventable.

That's exactly what our NPI team was built for. We get involved early, working alongside our customers from concept through production so that engineering, sourcing, and project management decisions are made with the full picture in mind — setting the launch up for success, not damage control.
