Reflecting tonight...

My graphic skills are a gift from God; I enjoy exercising that gift and sharing it with others. I've tried to make a living at this many years ago, but found that I began to lose my passion when I had to chase down customers to pay their bills.

For years now, I've been content doing work as frequently (or infrequently) as I feel comfortable with, and that is usually for friends or people I know. I find it odd that the reason I don't want to do this full-time often becomes the reason I don't want to do this part-time: dealing with people who take advantage of my gift, and I have to chase them down to pay their bills.

It's amazing that I can work for free, and not make a dime from a local business that uses my services, yet that business blows me off and doesn't make any effort to reimburse my out of pocket expenses. It always seems to take even longer the next time they owe me money.

It's now going on three months, and no effort has been made. As someone who tries very hard to give back to others, it stings that much more when I get taken for granted, and have to chase someone down to do the right thing. I shouldn't have to tell someone, let alone a business owner, that they owe me money - especially when they get my cost on everything.

There comes a point when you either continue to allow others to use you, or you cut bait. Giving is only a gift when it's well received; when it's expected, then it's no longer a gift - it's the price you pay for letting it to come to that point.
