J.Whitlow The 32 year old began his professional career in Memphis in the Shelby County Clerk’s Office as an entry level title clerk.

Jamal Whitlow, a native Memphian, connector of young professionals, entrepreneur, community leader, former board member for the Beale Street Tourism & Development Board announces his run for the Shelby County Clerk’s Office in 2018. Throughout his 5 years in the Shelby County Clerk’s Office Jamal was promoted 3 times. His final capacity would be the same position that current County Clerk Wayne M

ashburn would start his Clerk career as the Inventory Control Supervisor. Jamal is excited to follow in his parents footsteps who both worked for Shelby County Government.

Jamal left Shelby County Clerk’s office to grow and prepare himself for a promising return to the County Clerk’s Office to improve processes, develop staff and initiate community engagement. Jamal says, “ every time I talk with supporters and colleagues they always ask what do they do again.” ( Whitlow wants to help locals become familiar with Shelby County Clerk's office and services that the office provides Shelby County citizens. Whitlow has been busy over the last couple of years cultivating organizations, small brands, and his own lifestyle brand. As the owner and creative director for Privileged Memphis, Jamal has hosted workshops on brand management and business development, served as a motivational speaker at several schools and youth organizations, and hosted the first ever Privileged Memphis Music Festival at the historic Handy Park on Beale Street. Most recently, he created the Privileged Day Conference: The Digital Vison Board where young professionals came together to create strategies in economics, politics, and education. Jamal is currently a Job Developer for the Workforce Investment Network where he works with ex-offenders in training and career placement. Hard work but fitting for his passioinate characteristics, giving and serving. He was one of the youngest members to serve on the Beale Street Tourism Development Board, a former leadership council member for the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals, member of Hattiloo Theater Professional Council, and board member of the Davis YMCA branch in Whitehaven. Jamal truly believes in giving back to our community and volunteers his time speaking at schools throughout Memphis. Through his company, Privileged, he has partnered with Shelby County Schools and designed a 4-week leadership conference for high school students. Recently, he became a founding Board of Director of The Destiny Houses Inc., the governing body of proposed all-girls charter school, Rich Ed Academy of Leaders. Some days I have to remind myself, at the top of every mountain is the bottom of the next.

This sh*t gets hard. The climb don’t stop just because you reached a view. You just catch your breath, look around, and realize… there’s more work to do.

Over the past year, I’ve been climbing in the face of the toughest challenge I’ve ever met — myself.

No one asks the pencil how it feels to be sharpened. How it feels to lose pieces of itself just to keep creating. But that’s what growth is — losing parts that can’t come with you.
