One of the more difficult things I do when requested. Taking a cut off from a drop top, and fashioning a matching faceplate. I actually make my own veneer with my thickness sander, then use moisture and heat to bend it into place. When finished, they are always a great touch. This is right after the clamps have come off from gluing, and it’s been trimmed.

I blew out one of my routers, and had to get a new one. Like anyone who works with wood, I have several different ones. And being my table router, it ended up messing up a $150 piece of wood when it happened, which really pi**ed me off. So I go to Lowe’s, which has the widest selection of higher end ones. I walk up to that section, and there’s two employees standing there, both older than I am. So I say, “Which one of you guys knows your routers the best?” One guy says “Me,” and we walk over to them.
The first thing he says is, “I’m sorry, we just really don’t have a good selection.” I said, “Are you sold out, a seasonal run or something?” He says, “No! Nobody knows how to use them anymore. We used to carry 12 kinds. Power tools just don’t sell anymore. Here’s what I got.”
If you ever go anywhere these days, there’s zero customer service, people are dicks, and no one cares. This guy was so cool, took pride in his knowledge, advised me, knew all the terms I used - it was great. I left thinking about the state of skilled labor in this country. It’s really bad.
Then this other photo came up in my memories today. Makes you wonder how many people are left who can make something like this? I love skilled labor. Kiss a plumber or electrician today. Tell em you care! lol.

While we’re very proud of our best-selling Classic Series, my hat is off to small builders like me with all-original models. It’s a lot harder to develop. Our Aviator Bass, companion to the Aviator Guitar, is my favorite thing I’ve ever come up with.

Peter Moeck in Germany with the Custom ‘68 we made for him! I have a special place in my heart for Germany, since I’m half German, most of my relatives live there, and I went to college for a while there. So I’m glad I have a lot of German clients, several that are repeat customers. I’m like, WAY overdue for a trip there. The next German client I have, I’m gonna fly over and deliver it in person as an excuse to see all my family. These days carrying an instrument onboard, the flight is cheaper in a lot of countries than shipping, customs and VAT. Seriously, I’ve had two customers buy me tickets so we could meet and save money on shipping. All you Germans, heads up!
Darf ich Ihnen bitte ein Instrument bauen?! It das richtig? Meine deutsch ist so schlecht jetz!
