Happy Juneteenth from the Melrose Human Rights Commission!

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved persons in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free.

On the anniversary of that date, we honor the resilience and contributions of Black Americans throughout history and reaffirm the importance of protecting human rights.

The Melrose Human Rights Commission celebrates Black History Month, an annual observance honoring the legacy, leadership, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history and today.

During the month of February, we recognize the resilience, brilliance, and cultural impact of Black individuals and communities who have shaped our nation’s past and continue to influence its future.

Black History Month is a time for reflection, education, and action. As a commission, we reaffirm our commitment to racial equity, the amplification of Black voices, and the pursuit of a future rooted in justice, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Black history is American history and it deserves recognition every day.

Today, we honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., not only as a leader of the civil rights movement but as a global champion of human rights.

Dr. King fought for the dignity, equality, and freedom of all people. His work transcended borders and identities, calling attention to poverty, labor rights, racism, and the deep moral crisis of war and violence. In his words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

As we reflect today, the Melrose Human Rights Commission encourages our community to continue Dr. King’s work through action: standing up against injustice, advocating for equity, and building a world where every person’s rights are respected and protected.
