Experimenting with some smaller loaves so I can bake twice a week and always have fresh bread. The large loaf just doesn’t stay fresh all week.

THERE’S VALUE IN HAVING A “BULLPEN”

Lately, I have seen an increasing number of posts, in several different groups, asking what they could do to prevent fights between young c**kerels as they mature. Some people were even sharing photos of badly battered birds caused by these fights.

Here’s a trick used by many old-time breeders; they had a bullpen just for those young males. While it looked like a regular pen at first glance, it had a secret feature. That secret feature was that along with all the young males was one mature bachelor c**k bird that was two or three years old.

The old c**k bird was there to teach the youngsters some manners. Those old males never put up with any foolishness from their charges. As the c**kerels began to mature and their hormones kicked in, they would naturally want to test each other by fighting. The old male simply didn’t let that happen and quickly broke up fights before any damage was done. He was boss and those c**kerels knew it.

Once my mentor shared that tip with me, I began doing the same thing and it worked like a charm. When I separated my young males and females, I took the c**kerels to the bullpen and the old male took over from that point; problem solved, no more fighting!
