The Pressure of a New School Year

Looking back at that first-day-of-school picture, you’d never know we were already off to a very us start. 😂

New backpack, first-day pictures, nervous excitement…and we got there too late for breakfast in the cafeteria. So there we were, sitting outside his classroom while he chugged a yogurt before the bell rang.

Nothing says, “We are READY for kindergarten!” quite like speed-eating yogurt outside the classroom.

A month in, the excitement has worn off. Everyone is tired, mornings are rushed, and the after-school meltdowns hit a little harder.

I’ve spent more than 20 years working with children and families. I help parents understand development, behavior, regulation, and what their child may be trying to communicate. I know the research. I know the strategies.

Then my own child started kindergarten.

Apparently, professional experience does not make you immune to being completely humbled by your own kid.

At our first parent lunch, my son walked out of the cafeteria carrying a tray with chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, a Scooby gummy snack, a fruit roll-up, a popsicle AND a cupcake.

For lunch.

I looked at it and laughed. His lunch looked like a carnival concession stand.

I really thought a month into school we’d have our rhythm. Instead, some days we’re doing great. Other days we’re tired, dealing with meltdowns, rushing out the door, and wondering how it’s only Tuesday.

It’s reminded me that knowing what to do and actually doing it in the moment are two very different things.

You can understand why your child is dysregulated and still feel overwhelmed. You can believe in routines and still have chaotic mornings. You can know what healthy choices look like and still watch your kid proudly walk out with a popsicle and cupcake.

Some days we’ll use every tool in the toolbox. Other days, we’ll get everyone fed, loved, and where they need to be.

Then tomorrow, we try again. ❤️

💙 WHO WE ARE

Community Pathways for Kids (CPK) exists for the moments when a parent knows something is going on with their child—but isn’t sure what it is, what their child needs, or what to do next.

Families come to us with concerns about development, learning, behavior, communication, vision, school, feeding, social-emotional skills, and everyday routines. Sometimes a child already has a diagnosis. Sometimes they’re waiting months for an evaluation. And sometimes a parent simply has that feeling that their child needs more support.

You do not need a diagnosis to come to CPK.

Our job is to help families understand the bigger picture. We look at the whole child, help identify strengths and areas of concern, provide developmental guidance and caregiver coaching, and connect families with the right resources and professionals when additional support is needed.

But CPK is growing into more than individual family support.

We are working to build a stronger community around children by partnering with families, childcare centers, schools, providers, and community organizations. That includes developmental screening and assessment, caregiver education, professional training, vision services, inclusive play opportunities, school and childcare consultation, and community events that bring families and resources together.

Our goal isn't to replace therapists, teachers, doctors, or other specialists. We help connect the pieces.

Because families shouldn't have to figure out an overwhelming system alone—and support shouldn't begin only after a child receives a diagnosis.

At CPK, we believe that when we understand why something is happening, we can make better decisions about what comes next.
