Wildfires across North America are a reminder that improving our ability to anticipate extreme fire weather is more important than ever.
Wind is one of the biggest drivers of wildfire behavior, and accurately predicting changing conditions can help emergency managers make better informed decisions.
worked with public and private sector partners to develop Ponderosa, an AI-enabled capability that dramatically improves wind forecasts for wildfire management.
By providing richer wind data to existing weather models and visualizing results on geospatial maps, Ponderosa can help officials better anticipate wildfire spread and support efforts to protect communities.
Ponderosa is trained on publicly available meteorological data using our SuperPOD supercomputer. Learn more: http://spklr.io/6180EP97u

While the U.S. turns 250, continues to reflect on our technical contributions in service to America's economic prosperity and competitiveness.
Our economic security frameworks assess global supply-chain risks, evaluate the impacts of international trade policy decisions, and prioritize opportunities for U.S. competitiveness.
These insights enable smarter decision-making, strengthen America’s security and competitive edge, and empower analysts to identify risks and dependencies faster.
It’s our responsibility as a leader in federally funded R&D to advance systems and solutions for the nation.

As the U.S. celebrates 250 years, continues to reflect on our technical contributions in service to America's most complex challenges — including protecting the health and well-being of our communities.
One example is a cyber resiliency tool for the health sector — the RISC 2.0 Toolkit. A joint effort with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, the freely available RISC 2.0 Toolkit helps nearly 4,000 health systems nationwide plan for and mitigate ransomware and other cyberattacks.
The outcome: Hospitals and care teams stay operational during emergencies — when communities need them most.
It’s our responsibility as a leader in federally funded R&D to advance systems and solutions for the nation.

As our nation marks 250 years of progress and innovation, reflects on our technical contributions in service to U.S. security and joint force readiness.
Our National Security Engineering Center is at the heart of MITRE’s work for the warfighter. Through systems integration, prototyping, and technology transition, NSEC helps deliver cost-effective solutions to the field, meeting urgent mission needs across the services, combatant commands, agencies, and departments.
NSEC’s early work for the U.S. Air Force formed the nation’s first air defense system, key to Cold War advantage. Constantly adapting to stay ahead of evolving threats, NSEC has delivered fielded capabilities in every major conflict over the past 20 years.
It’s our responsibility as a leader in federally funded R&D to advance systems and solutions for the nation.

Lori Fermano sees graphic design as more than her career: “It’s in my blood.”
Over four decades on , she’s brought creativity, artistry, and accessibility to scores of digital and physical products showcasing MITRE’s work.
In an era when AI and self-serve design tools can generate visuals in seconds, Lori's career underscores a critical point: access to tools is not the same as design expertise.
The value of a skilled designer is not simply making something look polished. It’s knowing how visual choices shape understanding, trust, accessibility, and action.
“Every design detail—the imagery, the white space, the font usage, and where it appears on the product—makes a difference. We’re here to convey innovation, excitement, and brand identity in every MITRE publication and product.”
