"I think that all veterans feel like they're the lucky ones. That for us is really about Memorial Day and remembering those that didn't come home."

Brett VanderPlaats, Data Solutions Architect/Engineer at DMI, was inspired by an older cousin to join the Navy. He also cited an early leader he had in his Navy days as teaching him about leadership stating that, "Chief Rodriquez could manage people without having to rely or be led in traditional militaristic and autocratic style, with ability to have others work with him whether they were subordinate or senior."

Brett added that he is committed to ensuring that veterans are included in the workplace. He organized lunches for veterans to come together at a previous employer.

"It was very positive for those of us who had served or were even still serving in the reserves to have that connection." He emphasized that it's critical not to put veterans on a pedestal, adding that sometimes it's hard for veterans to accept a comment thanking them for their service when they know someone who has served longer or sacrificed their life for their country, and sometimes those soldiers who made that sacrifice stood to the left and right of us. "Often, a quiet, personal thank you is always very welcomed over a public one."

Thank you, Brett, for your service and for sharing your story with us!

When stress builds up in both your professional and personal life, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. One strategy to help you maintain your mental well-being is compartmentalization.

Try this:
-Visualize mentally placing work-related stressors in a "work box" and home-related stressors in a "home box."
-Focus on one "box" at a time, giving it your full attention without letting the other intrude.
-Be sure to take breaks, breathe deeply, and practice mindfulness to help maintain the boundaries between these compartments.

Remember, it's okay not to be okay. At DMI, we offer a global employee assistance program (EAP) that provides five free face-to-face sessions per issue, per member, per year. Reach out for support when needed and be kind to yourself.

This , we're taking a moment to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

"For me, I think military appreciation should be every month, every day, every year. There are people missing birthdays, their child's first steps, and giving their lives right now."

Tamara Jones, Agile Coach at DMI and veteran of the U.S. Air Force was inspired by the camaraderie she saw between her father and his airmen. When she was nine years old, she decided she wanted to follow in his footsteps.

Tamara is passionate about veterans being able to stay informed about & access their healthcare benefits and about women in the military being recognized for their contributions.

"I'm very adamant about women in the military being taken seriously and given the same opportunities."

Tamara highlighted the importance of being open and understanding of veterans' mental health to ensure their inclusion in the workplace. She added that what might be a big deal to one person may not be to another.

"It's important to understand that every veteran is different, just like every non-veteran. Focus on the individual, respect their needs and wants, and understand them as human beings."

Thank you, Tamara, for your service and for sharing your story with us!

At DMI, our people are at the heart of what we do. That's why, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to highlight the various ways in which we support employee well-being through our Global Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Our EAP, provided in partnership with Cigna, is a free, confidential service available to all employees worldwide and their household family members. It offers a wide range of resources to help navigate life's challenges, both personal and professional. Through the EAP, our employees have access to five face-to-face counseling sessions per issue, per member, per year; assistance with finding healthcare services and childcare resources; and online training, seminars, and articles covering topics like diversity, building positive relationships at work, and professional networking. The EAP program also offers specialized content for managers, including guidance on managing change, communication skills, and leading virtual teams.

By offering these resources, we aim to create a supportive work environment that empowers our team to thrive both personally and professionally. We encourage our employees to take advantage of the EAP and all it has to offer.

At DMI, our employees' diverse backgrounds, unique perspectives, and unwavering dedication are the driving forces behind our success.

Here’s a Talent Spotlight Q&A with Breena Lewis, Senior Assistant at DMI:

𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐌𝐈.
As Senior Assistant at DMI, I bring an unwavering commitment to DMI’s vision and a passion for facilitating success. In my role, I provide administrative, analytical and project support to the National Security & Critical Infrastructure leadership team, in addition to coordinating IT asset and inventory support for employees servicing a DMI client. I keep the wheels turning to ensure the vertical has the freedom to focus on strategy, program growth and innovation.

𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮?
Remote and flexible work is exciting! Prior to the pandemic, administrative professionals were not widely granted the opportunity to work remotely. The role was seen as traditionally performed in an office but has evolved with the advent of remote work. Flexibility in work settings has gained prominence and administrative professionals have done a fantastic job demonstrating they can successfully perform their roles from anywhere and thrive.

I am also excited about advances in digital transformation like cybersecurity and data protection. Administrative professionals are often tasked with safeguarding sensitive and confidential data. Staying updated on security practices to protect data is crucial.

𝐃𝐌𝐈’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 “𝐃𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞." 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐃𝐌𝐈𝐞𝐫?
To me, "Do More" means to stop at nothing short of excellence! It's a mindset that says go the extra mile and don’t settle for less. When I work with my DMI client, I seek out opportunities to contribute beyond what is expected and do my best to anticipate issues and address them before they become a problem. Sometimes this means taking on more tasks, working late, or performing additional research outside of my job description -- whatever is necessary to achieve the needed results.

Thank you, Breena, for participating in our Talent Spotlight series!

When life feels challenging, it's easy to focus on what's going wrong. This , take a moment to shift your perspective and practice simple gratitude.

Try one (or all!) of these ideas:

-Write down 3 things you're thankful for, no matter how small they may seem. Maybe it’s the neighbor’s flower garden that you see every day from your kitchen window, or the morning licks from your beloved dog.

-When you’re out for coffee or brunch, look for ways to express your appreciation to others. Or reach out to a friend, family member, or colleague and let them know how much you value them.

-Reflect on your personal growth: Acknowledge how much you have grown as a person and list out the strengths you've developed along the way. Cultivating gratitude has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. It's a simple yet powerful tool to have in your toolkit.

This Mother's Day, we at DMI want to celebrate the incredible women who have shaped our lives and our world.

We recognize that not everyone has had the privilege of a traditional mother figure in their lives. Some have found guidance, love, and support from grandmothers, aunts, step-mothers, sisters, friends, or other strong women who have stepped up to fill that role.

From the women who packed school lunches and helped their kids discover a passion, to the pioneering women in technology who unlocked opportunities for future generations, we are grateful for their support and inspiration.

Today, we honor all the women who have made a difference in our lives, whether they are biological mothers or not. Here's to the women who inspire us to innovate, create, and build a better future.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at DMI.

Visit the DMI Booth # 138 during the AFCEA Belvoir Industry Days starting on Monday, May 13.

This year’s theme is “Digital Modernization, Unified Operations & Data Dominance through Agile Acquisition.” At the DMI Booth you will gain insight into DMI's innovative automation solutions that can improve the speed, security, and quality of software delivery at a lower cost.

Congratulations to Marion Ticknor, Chief People Officer at DMI, on being named a finalist in the Private and Public Chief Human Resources Officer category of WashingtonExec's Chief Officer Awards!

In a recent Q&A with WashingtonExec, Marion discussed DMI’s key achievements in 2023 and focus areas for the future.

Also in the interview, Marion shared career advice to young professional women about the importance of speaking up: “Far too often, young professional women do not voice their opinions or take decisive action because they are unsure about the ‘right’ thing to say or do. To these women, I say: Don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Errors are inevitable, so when you do make a wrong decision, take accountability, and move forward. Try not to let fear prevent you from speaking your mind.”

Each week, we'll feature a short Q&A with one of our employees, giving you an inside look at their roles, their journey with DMI, and what inspires them both professionally and personally.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐌𝐈?
My role at DMI is to deliver value to our clients by leading our Project Managers and System Admins in being the best professional versions of themselves with a “Customer Service first” attitude.

One example of helping clients overcome challenges, solve problems and achieve business objectives has been active listening. In my experience, when DMI takes over an unhappy or disappointed client, the first thing we do is listen intently and address every concern the client has. This builds confidence from day one and sets the foundational success tone for the rest of the project.
