Stronger ‘Move Over’ Law Takes Effect in Texas This September

Starting September 1, 2025, drivers in Texas must slow down 20 mph below the speed limit or move over a lane when approaching flashing lights on the roadside.

This law, part of Senate Bill 305, now protects tow truck drivers, TxDOT crews, utility workers, parking enforcement, animal control, and garbage collectors—not just police and EMS.

First-time violators face fines up to $1,250, and if someone is hurt, penalties can reach $4,000 plus criminal charges.

On September 9, Montana will dedicate the Wall of the Fallen Tow Operator Memorial at the Headwaters Rest Area near Three Forks.

Crowning the memorial is a stunning bronze “Soaring Eagle” carrying the American Flag, created by local artist Mary Michael. The sculpture symbolizes strength, sacrifice, and freedom — honoring Montana’s tow operators who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Sponsored by the Montana state towing association, the monument not only remembers the fallen but also reminds the public of the importance of slowing down and moving over to keep roadway workers safe.
