There's something really fun about the energy of an organization that's reaching higher than ever before. Excited for this group to finish the season strong!

Had a blast teaching the Mandarins drumline this month! The stars aligned in the schedule, so I hopped on the road for 12 days, and got to meet so many amazing students, teachers, and new drum corps friends.
These players improved every single day, which is tough to do so consistently all through July. They aren't afraid to go for it as performers and it's an honor to join them on their journey.
Thanks to Taha and Andy for the invite, Dray for running a smooth ship, and the entire Mandarins staff for welcoming me onto the team. It's a fantastic and healthy teaching environment and I'm looking forward to what this group will put on the field for the rest of the season.

Drum Corps Birthday! Yesterday was my 37th, and the 10th time I’ve celebrated it on the road with DCI. Rehearsal was too busy to catch a yard line photo so I got one this morning on the open turf before the corps got going. Really thankful to the Mandarins organization for running such a smooth operation, and to the Mandarins drum staff and players for inviting me on. Everyone here has been super welcoming and it’s a really enjoyable place to teach and share a passion for the activity.
“Twin Primes”
An original snare composition + soundscape. I like to call these short pieces “Electric Licks” because I start with the snare writing and add the soundscape afterward to support it, making the snare drum the lead singer, in a sense. I plan to compile several of these in a book that will come with the soundscapes, and some tips on how I edit and put these together. If you like this one or have thoughts on what might go in the other licks, leave me a comment or send me a message. Thanks for watching! - Dan

Super stoked to be presenting “Marching Percussion as a Tool for Personal Expression” as part of StrYveMind’s clinic series. It sounds like it’s all about snare drum, but I’ve geared this presentation to be useful to music educators of all types- NOT just drumline folks. If you are or know a band director, private lesson instructor, marching band tech, or music educator of any kind, share this and let your network know this clinic is happening. Looking forward to presenting at Carter Riverside High School in Fort Worth from 4-5:30pm. See y’all there!
Merry Christmas, y'all! Possibly my favorite viral Christmas video is this one of Jackson arguing with his Dad about being on the naughty list. He's so convinced, I think he actually wins the argument in a way, just because he throws his Dad completely for a loop with the uppercut comment. It was the perfect video for an experiment I've been wanting to try, basically drumming some notes alongside speech, and seeing if it was possible to match the stronger syllables with accents. After spending a longer time than I'd like to admit writing and recording this lick, I can tell you- it's not easy. But, a worthy and enjoyable challenge, and hopefully Jackson and his Dad don't mind me borrowing this viral clip for some drum inspiration. Have a blessed holiday season and stay safe in the cold, folks! Oh, and try to avoid uppercutting Santa so you can stay on the nice list. 😂
It's fun to take the big three (Flam Drags, Cheeses and Flam Fives) and add them to a flam phrase. You can add it anywhere there's a flam accent. Here, I've left the first flam accent alone, and only modify the last two. Just a random flam phrase I thought of when we stopped to check out this cool tree in one of Hawaii's state parks. Feb, '22
