June 15 is Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Fighting elder abuse begins with recognizing and admitting that it does happen. Some victims of abuse may show injuries from physical abuse, but others may be suffering psychological abuse, or some forms of neglect. Some may be experiencing financial exploitation, which may be almost impossible to detect.

Often, the victims may be hesitant to even discuss, or may not be willing to admit, that these offenses are happening.

These offenses can happen anywhere — at home with family or friends, at work among colleagues, or in public or private places.
Each of us---every human being, regardless of age----deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Our elders paved a pathway for us and for our communities and nations. They should not be the objects of abuse.
