Maumee City Schools Board of Education President Allison Fiscus Invites Community Input Regarding School District Finances

As members of the Maumee City Schools Board of Education, we are responsible for ensuring that today's students and future generations of students continue to receive the high-quality educational opportunities our community expects and deserves. This responsibility has led us to have important conversations about the district's long-term financial outlook.

Like all Ohio public school districts, Maumee City Schools relies on three primary sources of operating revenue: local, state, and federal funding. While state funding is provided through Ohio's Fair School Funding Plan, that plan has only been funded at approximately 66% of its intended level since 2023. As a result, school districts across Ohio have become increasingly dependent on local funding to support educational programs and services.

Locally approved revenue represents the largest source of funding for Maumee City Schools. Yet, despite rising costs for staffing, transportation, utilities, technology, and educational programming, school districts do not automatically receive additional revenue when property values increase. And, the last time the school board asked the community to approve an operating levy was in May of 2018.

Today, Maumee City Schools has an annual operating budget of approximately $38 million and employs nearly 520 staff members, coaches, advisors, and substitute employees who serve our students. Personnel costs account for more than 82% of the district's operating expenses.

The district's five-year financial forecast projects that while annual operating revenue will remain relatively flat at approximately $36.3 million to $36.9 million, expenditures are expected to grow from $36.7 million this year to more than $45 million by Fiscal Year 2030. As a result, the district expects annual operating deficits to grow year over year, with a negative cash balance by Fiscal Year 2029 if no action is taken.

**The Board of Education is considering two potential options to address this challenge: placing a 1.25% earned income tax or a 6.9-mill property tax levy before voters on the November 2026 ballot. Reducing our educational programs, services, or the opportunities available to students is not a direction we want to take.

**No final decision has been made yet. We believe these discussions deserve community input, and we encourage residents to attend the Maumee City Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 22, at 5:45 p.m. (716 Askin Street). Community members will have the opportunity to address the Board and share their thoughts as we consider the district's financial future.

These are not easy conversations, but they are necessary ones. Our goal is to be transparent about the district's financial realities while preserving the exceptional educational programs, student support services, and extracurricular opportunities that make Maumee City Schools a source of pride for our community.
We invite you to learn more, review the district's five-year forecast, and join the conversation as we work together to determine the best path forward for Maumee City Schools and the students we serve.
