Foam and quilted foam are pulled from the old mattresses, baled, and then turned over to carpet manufacturers for extensive cleaning for eventual use in carpet padding.

What is Mattress Recycling?

Mattress recycling involves taking apart the components of beds and reusing them in other applications. It is different then mattress refurbishing or renovating, which involves reupholstering and reselling the bed.
Most materials in a mattress can be repurposed once a bed is deconstructed (about 85-90%), and enterprising entrepreneurs are constantly developing new ways to use old bedding.

Springs & Coils: Metal is melted and made into new items.

Foams: Mattress foam is shredded and used in carpet padding , moving pads, and as a fuel source.

Fibers: Cotton and other fibers can used in filters, insulation or burned for fuel.

Fabrics & Upholstery: Can be reclaimed for use in other items.

Wood: Can be chipped for mulch or burned for fuel.

Changing consumer behaviour is behind this ever-growing mattress mountain. Time was, you would change your mattress every eight to 10 years. But with online retailers offering more choice than ever, we have learned to expect better mattresses, and to replace them more frequently.

Mattress Recycling

Landfill space is filling up rather quickly, especially with bulky items. One obvious thing that takes a lot of space in landfills are mattresses, which makes it really important to know how to dispose of your mattress properly.

More than 50,000 mattresses end up in landfills each day.

(That number doesn’t even include fold-out sofa beds, couches, recliners, and the like.) An average mattress takes up about 40 cubic feet of space. Fortunately, around eighty percent (80%) of most mattress’ components can be recycled. Once you have decided that it is time to upgrade or replace your mattress, consider recycling and not disposal at your local landfill.
