Jung believed we tend to bury the parts of ourselves we’re uncomfortable with: our fears, desires, weaknesses, and memories. He called this hidden side of ourselves the “shadow.”
But ignoring it doesn’t make it disappear. Jung believed that actually facing these parts of ourselves was necessary for growth.
It was part of what he called individuation, the lifelong process of understanding and accepting the different parts of who we are.
In that sense, fear can be a kind of signpost. Sometimes the things we keep avoiding are exactly the things we need to confront.
