Before you turn on the water to your outdoor faucets this spring, check their exterior components for cracks that may have formed during the cold winter. Discovering cracks before using your hose for spring watering can help you get repairs done early and save time later on.

As the snow melts and the rains come, your sump pump will soon be working overtime to keep water out of your home. To make sure it’s working, pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should turn on and drain the water fully. Make sure the float is moving freely, as this activates the pump when the water rises. Remove any sticks or debris from the outdoor discharge line and replace your backup battery if it’s more than three years old.

Burst pipes are a common problem during the winter. Pipes in cold, uninsulated areas, like along an exterior wall, in the basement, in the attic, or in the crawlspace, are especially at risk. To prevent these pipes from freezing, cracking, and bursting, try these easy prevention strategies:
• Cover exposed pipes with foam pipe sleeves or pipe wrap insulation
• Let faucets drip slightly on extremely cold nights
• Keep cabinet doors open to allow heat to reach pipes
• Keep your home heated above 55°, especially at night
If your pipes do burst, call Robillard Plumbing right away. We will shut off the water supply, inspect your plumbing for further issues, and refer reputable restoration companies.
