☕ Good Morning from the Rescue! ☕

Current status:

✔ Dogs fed
✔ Water bowls filled
✔ Kennels cleaned
✔ Laundry started
✔ Coffee consumed

❌ Everyone adopted

We’re not saying we have a kennel full of professional couch warmers, blanket thieves, treat negotiators, and personal space invaders…

…but we’re not not saying that either. 😆

Somewhere out there is a family looking for a best friend, and somewhere in our rescue is a dog wondering why they keep getting overlooked.

So while you’re scrolling this morning, do us a favor:

🐾 Share a dog.
🐾 Tell a friend about fostering.
🐾 Consider adoption.
🐾 Send coffee
(Mostly kidding. Sort of.)

The dogs are ready.
The volunteers are ready.
The dogs are really ready.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have 50+ supervisors watching us work and judging every move we make. 👀🐶

Swiper

If you’re looking for a fun-sized best friend, look no further!

Swiper is about 5–6 months old and is ready to trade rescue life for family life. We think he may have some Corgi mixed in there somewhere, but whatever he is, he’s absolutely adorable.

This little guy is full of personality. He’s curious, playful, and always ready to see what adventure comes next. Whether it’s exploring the backyard, going for walks, or curling up beside you after a busy day, Swiper is just happy to be included.

While his brother has already found a family of his own, Swiper is still patiently waiting for his turn. We know his perfect match is out there—we just need to help them find him.

He’s got the cute short legs, the sweet puppy face, and enough love to fill an entire home.

🏡 Ready to meet your new best friend?

Emily ❤️

For the first time in a very long time, Emily gets to just be a dog.

Her puppies have all grown, become independent, and started their own journeys. Now it’s Emily’s turn.

We believe Emily spent much of her life doing what mothers do best putting everyone else first. She raised her babies, protected them fiercely, and made sure they had everything she could give. But now, for the first time, she doesn’t have puppies to care for. She gets to discover what life is like when someone is taking care of her.

Emily is approximately 6–7 years old and has been separated from her puppies for a couple of weeks now. Every day we watch her confidence grow. She is learning that walks can be fun, that people can be trusted, and that life doesn’t have to be about survival anymore.

She’s learning to walk
on a leash and loves gentle encouragement from her people. New things can still make her a little nervous, but when she’s unsure, she looks up at you with those sweet, soulful eyes and asks for reassurance. It’s impossible not to fall in love with her.

Emily doesn’t need much. She isn’t looking for adventure or excitement. She’s looking for comfort. A soft bed. A loving family. A peaceful home where she never has to worry about being abandoned, having puppies, or facing the world alone again.

After everything she’s done for her babies, we think it’s finally time someone does something for her.

Could that be you?

🐱💕 Did You Know?

Kittens are born with blue eyes, spend up to 70% of their day sleeping, and learn how to purr when they’re just days old. Their whiskers help them measure spaces, and every kitten has a unique nose print—just like a fingerprint!

The best fact of all? The tiny kitten you adopt today could spend the next 15–20 years loving you. ❤️

Ready to add a little purrfection to your family? 🐾

Some glow-ups are amazing.

And then there’s Azalea. ❤️

Not that long ago, Azalea and her brother were found on the back roads of Johnson County with an uncertain future. Like so many dogs we see, she was simply one of the lucky ones—lucky that someone stopped, lucky that someone cared, and lucky that rescue stepped in.

We were fortunate enough to pull her to safety and give her a chance.

Today, look at her.

This sweet rescue dog has gone from being discarded on a country road to serving a purpose bigger than anyone could have imagined. Azalea has officially joined the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) K9 Program with Johns Hopkins Public Safety.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The little dog who once needed saving is now helping others.

The dog who could have easily been overlooked is now trained to provide support during critical incidents and times of crisis.

This is why we do what we do.

Every dog deserves a chance.
Every dog deserves someone to believe in them.
And sometimes, when given that chance, they absolutely change the world.

We couldn’t be more proud of you, sweet girl. 🐾

Rescue dog to the rescue.

Congratulations, Azalea. Your Second Chance family is cheering you on every step of the way. 💙

📣 Extra Extra
read all about it!

We are incredibly excited to officially welcome Lindsey Benke with Lindsey Leash to the Second Chance family as our
newest trainer! 🐾

Many of you may have already seen Lindsey around the rescue. She has quietly been getting to know our dogs, our volunteers, and is currently working with our sweet Olive. We are thrilled to have someone with her knowledge, experience, and passion joining our team.

A little about Lindsey:

Lindsey’s love for animals began at a very young age. She started volunteering with rescues and shelters before going on to work as a Veterinary Technician throughout high school, college, and beyond. In 2010, after adopting her heart dog, Riley, her passion evolved into professional dog training and behavior.

Since then, Lindsey has dedicated herself to continuing education through seminars, workshops, and hands-on learning alongside other professionals in the field. Her goal is to help dogs and their families build meaningful relationships through training, structure, and purpose.

💬 A message from Lindsey:

“My goal is to teach you and your dog the value of meaningful work and purpose. I look forward to helping you pursue your dream of a well-behaved canine. I hope to meet you soon and look forward to working with all of the volunteers and new adopting families.”

Please join us in giving Lindsey a warm Second Chance welcome! We can’t wait to see all of the amazing things she will accomplish with our dogs, adopters, fosters, and volunteers.

🐶 Welcome to the family, Lindsey! ❤️

💔 DENALI 💔

Sometimes the dogs that need us the most are the ones who ask for the least.

When Denali was found, he wasn’t running up to strangers asking for help. He wasn’t wagging his tail or begging for attention.

He was frozen, Terrified, Alone.

He had been spotted near a fireworks stand, standing quietly in a world that must have felt incredibly scary and confusing. No one knows exactly what happened to him before that day, but we know enough to understand that life hadn’t been very kind to him.

Denali is an Australian Shepherd mix, just under a year old. We believe he may be partially deaf, which isn’t uncommon in this breed of dogs. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Denali, it’s that he doesn’t let anything stop him from trying.

Every day he gets a little braver.

Every day he learns something new.

Every day he takes another tiny step toward trusting people again.

He’s learning how to walk on a leash. Learning that meals come regularly. Learning that gentle hands exist. Learning that not every day has to be spent worrying about survival.

Most of all, he’s learning what it feels like to be loved.

What Denali needs now isn’t complicated.

He needs a soft bed, A safe home.

A confident dog friend to show him the ropes.

A family willing to be patient while he discovers that the world isn’t such a scary place after all.

We often wonder what goes through his mind when he curls up at night. Does he remember being abandoned? Does he remember being scared? Does he wonder if he’ll ever belong somewhere?

We hope one day he’ll never have to wonder again.

Because every dog deserves to know what it feels like to be safe.

Every dog deserves a couch to nap on.

Every dog deserves a family.

And this sweet boy deserves a second chance.

Denali is up-to-date on vaccinations and is waiting for his neuter appointment.

If you’ve ever wanted to change a life, this is your chance.

😭 Be his foster.
😭 Be his family.
❤️‍🩹 Be the reason his story has
a happy ending.
