Bills to watch in Georgia
HB 909 will improve Georgia's First Offender Act (FOA) so it delivers on its intended promise by making sure that First Offender cases are not available to the public if someone successfully serves their FOA sentence. HB 909 will be heard today (Monday, 1/29) at 1:30 p.m. in the Hong Subcommittee of Judiciary Non-Civil in Room 132 at the State Capitol.
HB 1014 - Georgia is a dangerous outlier in death penalty ID law. This bill would change Georgia law related to the death penalty for people with intellectual disability (ID) by doing two things: (1) lowering the standard of proof for ID and (2) removing the ID determination from the guilt phase of litigation.
