Chair caning & seat weaving for 35+ years
06/14/2026
I don’t often get opportunities to weave a rush seat like this. Maybe 2-3 a year. My wife gave me a compliment: “Your starting to do a much better job on these”. 🤔😉👨🦳 my early work on Rush seats may NOT have met her quality standards I guess. Anyway, I’m happy with this work.
Hitchcock, ladder back, painted chair with Fibre Rush hand woven seat.
Two coats of 50/50 Amber Shellack & Denatured Alcohol applied for protection.
Ready to be displayed at home.

Just keep trying to improve.
This may be my best weaving of a caned seat. Note the underside & how well the cane looks. As I progress, the quality of caning is as important topside, as underneath.
A very beautiful Oak chair from maybe 1880’s to 1920’s. Note the 3 rungs all the way around.
Beautiful chair!!!

Two rocker seat finished this week. The back needs recaning on one rocker, but “customer knows best” or DOES NOT! Anyway this may come back again & cost them more.
Notice the swoop seat in the one rocker. Have to get the tension right to maintain the curvature.

Ready to home.

A Pair ready to go.
There was no step 7, so matched it. The holes were drilled through the legs horizontally, so weird weaving. 122 holes in one & 116 in other, unusual.
Beautiful chairs.

Challenging chair holes. Drilled through the 4 legs, Spaced narrower on back rail than front rail.
Holes go diagonally through side & front rails; then vertically down through back rail.
Making me really think, & a far reach to thread holes. Two of these to do.
