This diagram sums it up better than any words can. Everytime a fishing guide sees a rod go vertical, we cringe waiting for the gun shot sound of a broken rod.
If you let your rods do the work they are designed to do, they will last nearly forever. When your force them to do the wrong thing, they fail rather quickly.

And that's the way it was . . . late 80's. Didn't need no stupid GPS, spotlock, or live scan. These showed everything. Some of you fished from this machine!

Not the way to start a guided jig fishing trip, in the cold and wind. We didn't get skunked and I still got paid, so all was not lost.
