JUNE: THE FAIREST DAUGHTER OF THE YEAR

“Mine is the Month of Roses; yes, and mine
The Month of Marriages! All pleasant sights
And scents, the fragrance of the blossoming vine,
The foliage of the valleys and the heights.
Mine are the longest days, the loveliest nights;
The mower’s scythe makes music to my ear;
I am the mother of all dear delights;
I am the fairest daughter of the year.”
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (American poet and educator; 1807 – 1882)

INSPIRATION: THE ANTIDOTE TO HUMDRUM (Part 1)

Have you ever noticed that you’ve stopped noticing? It seems part of our humanity that the more familiar we are with something, the less conscious of it we become. For example, there’s a good chance your morning routine is so repetitive that you accomplish many of your morning tasks while completely focused on the agenda for the day ahead. This ability to sleep walk through huge portions of our lives often comes at a high price: our appreciation for routine experiences diminishes. We no longer savor the beauty, process, aromas, flavors of our moment-by-moment existence.

This auto-pilot mode is often reflected in our gardens as we begin to relate to them as backgrounds to be maintained rather than spaces for interaction and joy. This mental shift is unfortunate because, like any living thing, gardens require regular attention and care in order to thrive. Join us next week to find out the antidote to this unfortunate familiarity. . . .

THE GREEN, GREEN WORLD

"June comes, and ours is so green a world that we quite forget the all but leafless days of January, so warm and beneficent a world that we can't quite remember those zero mornings when the land was white with snow and ice. Now it is June, it is warm, it is summer... Robins have found their voices and brown thrashers celebrate morning, afternoon, and evening."
~Hal Borland (American writer, journalist and naturalist; 1900 - 1978)

SUKIYA -- THE JAPANESE ART OF INTEGRATING HOUSE AND GARDEN

There’s something timeless about a home that doesn’t compete with nature, but quietly belongs to it.

Inspired by a traditional Japanese architectural style that dates back to 16th-century tea houses, the sukiya design approach celebrates the deep connection between house and garden. Every element is intentional: natural materials like wood and stone, simple lines, and spaces that invite stillness rather than excess.

But what makes this style truly special is how seamlessly the indoors and outdoors flow together. The garden isn’t just something look at—it becomes part of the living space, a daily presence that brings calm, beauty, and perspective. This harmonious integration between the house and the garden is a goal that we, at Hanselman Landscape, seek to incorporate into each of the gardens we design and build for our clients from our headquarters in Manheim, Pennsylvania.

The Sukiya living ideal is a reminder that a home can be more than shelter—it can be a place of harmony, where nature and daily life exist side by side in quiet balance.

JUNE SONG

"Ah, lovely June, thy sunny days are here,
The world seems gayer for thy coming;
The glad birds sing their shrill and tender songs,
And all day long the bees are humming.
All fairest things are of thyself a part:
Ah, lovely June, so sweet thou art!...

GARDEN ART IN EVERY SEASON OF THE YEAR

While I won't argue that wall art is truly lovely, my home is surrounded by living, garden artwork that's on display through every window "picture frame" in the house. And this art is not static--it changes seasonally, if not daily. How grateful I am for the privilege of living within this thoughtfully-designed garden art studio! The photos shared here show the view from one of our window picture frames in each season of the year.

If this type of artwork appeals to you, give us a call: 717-653-1273! We'd love to discuss the possibility of surrounding your home with living, growing, constantly-changing garden art.

JUNE

"What is one to say about June — the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade? For my own part I wander up into the wood and say, "June is here — June is here; thank God for lovely June!" The soft cooing of the wood-dove, the glad song of many birds, the flitting of butterflies, the hum of all the little winged people among the branches, the sweet earth-scents — all seem to say the same, with an endless reiteration. . . . "
