The automotive museum community is small, and today we're heartbroken for MY Garage Museum & Retail Store in Effingham, Illinois, after a tornado destroyed the museum last night. Our thoughts are with their team, supporters, and community as they begin the difficult road ahead. Certainly there is memorabilia that is irreplaceable, but the thing that is NOT replaceable are the lives of the people that work there and those in that community. From what we understand from news reports this morning, there were no fatalities from this storm and that is something to be grateful for.

Are you ready to kick-off the America250 Celebration here in Riley County?

As part of our local America250 celebration, residents of Manhattan/Riley County, Kansas are invited to submit ideas and items for inclusion in a commemorative time capsule! Space is limited but creativity is welcome as we gather together items that highlight life in 2026. Items must be appropriate for any audience but may include artwork, letters, stories, music, physical and digital objects. Submission proposals will be accepted until July 31, 2026 and all submissions will be reviewed by August 31, 2026.

A community event to view the capsule and its contents will be held on November 15, 2026 at the Midwest Dream Car Collection Museum. The capsule will be sealed and then at a later date, buried on the grounds of the Riley County Historical Museum (as an exhibit) for the next fifty years with a reopening planned in 2076, during the nation's 300th birthday.

How to participate:

All submissions will be reviewed and someone from the time capsule committee will respond to you with further instructions should your submission be approved. Please do not drop any items off without committee approval.

Some museum visits become unforgettable memories.

This past weekend, 7-year-old Easton visited the Midwest Dream Car Collection with his family and brought along a few of his favorite toy cars, including an orange Lamborghini Aventador just like the one on display in our museum!

When our staff noticed, they invited Easton to sit in the real Lamborghini. The experience made his day and nearly brought him to tears.

Then we discovered that his sister, Adeline, was celebrating her 9th birthday! To make her day extra special, she got to sit in our iconic 1963 Volkswagen Bus.

Happy 9th Birthday, Adeline! And thank you, Easton, for sharing your love of cars with us. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do, creating memories and inspiring the next generation of car enthusiasts.

Motor Monday- Volkswagen looked at this quirky vehicle and simply called it "The Thing."
