Why It Matters: Maternal Health

Pregnancy and childbirth are safer today than they have ever been, yet hundreds of thousands of women around the world still die each year from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.

The care a mother receives before and after delivery can be just as important as the care she receives during childbirth.

Prenatal care helps identify potential complications before they become emergencies, while postnatal care supports the health of both mother and baby during the critical weeks after delivery.

This is why maternal health matters. It's about ensuring mothers and babies receive the care they need before, during, and after birth so they have the healthiest possible start.

Why It Matters: Access to Healthcare

A healthy community starts with access to healthcare.

When people can see a doctor, receive treatment, and get the care they need, children are more likely to thrive, mothers are more likely to have safe pregnancies, and families are better able to care for one another.

Yet millions of people around the world still face barriers to receiving medical care.

At Social Promise, we believe everyone deserves access to quality healthcare.

Lessons From Lacor Hospital's Ebola Response — Social Promise 05/27/2026

The Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and recent confirmed cases in Uganda have raised understandable concerns about preparedness across the region, including at Lacor Hospital in northern Uganda.

While no cases have been reported in the region Lacor serves, the hospital is once again reviewing protocols, strengthening surveillance measures, and preparing staff through ongoing training and prevention efforts.

Having played a critical role during Uganda’s 2000 Ebola outbreak, Lacor brings decades of experience in public health preparedness and response.

We wrote more about what preparedness currently looks like at Lacor Hospital and why strong healthcare systems matter long before a crisis begins.

Lessons From Lacor Hospital's Ebola Response — Social Promise Although no cases have been reported in Northern Uganda, Lacor Hospital is maintaining a high level of vigilance and preparedness.
