Based on the First Amendment to the Constitution, 45words celebrates scholastic press rights.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government ... This page is for sharing ideas, spreading news of possible censorship or challenges students face, promoting awareness and connecting people who are passionate about the First Amendment.

December 15 deadline for FAFPA Award application 11/20/2014

The deadline is approaching for application for this year’s First Amendment Press Freedom Award (FAPFA). If your staffs have received a Pacemaker or Gold Crown, FAPFA is the next logical step in recognizing journalistic excellence and practice of First Amendment guarantees.

In its 15th year, the recognition is designed to identify and recognize high schools that actively support and protect First Amendment rights of their students and teachers. The honor focuses on press freedoms.

The application can be completed by using a SurveyGizmo form. Deadline for submission is Dec. 15, 2014.

When European newspapers began modernizing their designs, U.S. high school and college press were the first follow suit by ditching column rules, adopting modern headline styles, introducing more photos, and using the principle of hierarchy. (Professional U.S. papers didn't generally do so until the late 1950s.)

Happy Scholastic Journalism Week! Here's some history for you: High school newspapers started in the 1920s. One of the first was the South Side Times in Ft. Wayne, IN, advised by Rowena Harvey, who was also a then-rare female sports writer.
