Fighting fire with fire… in New England of all places.

I went out last week with firefighters from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management for a prescribed burn in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

Wildfires are not just a Western thing. I was surprised to learn tiny Rhode Island had 62 wildfires last year alone, partly because climate change has extended fire season nationwide. The DEM is doing what it can to minimize risk responsibly, burning out densely wooded areas of the forest.

It got so hot near the flames, the iPhone I was using to record pictures and sound stopped working for a time. The whole experience took me right back to my days covering big wildfires in California, Oregon, Arizona and elsewhere.
