It’s time for crowning jewel of America’s triple crown circuit! While there won’t be a triple crown winner this year, two horses in this race are aiming to win 2/3 triple crown races. They are Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize The Grey.

Both of these horses were big surprises, Mystik Dan showed it wasn’t a fluke as he ran 2nd impressively in the Preakness. It remains to be seen how Seize The Grey will respond after the big win, but if I’m being honest I don’t expect either horse to win this one.

Sierra Leone nearly won the Kentucky Derby after a much tougher trip than Mystik Dan. After skipping the Preakness race, I expect trainer Chad Brown to have this horse in top form. If he is, then Sierra Leone will be the horse to beat Saturday!

It’s time!!!! The 2nd installment of the horse racing triple crown is upon us! Let’s forget the Kentucky Derby completely where we failed to pick the winner. The outside post proved to be too much for Fierceness to overcome as it often is every year. We did however pick the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th horses.

Our pick for this race is the #9 Bob Baffert trained horse Imagination. With the favorite in this race #4 Muth scratched due to fever, which was also Baffert’s horse. We expect all available drugs and resources to be pumped into Imagination so that he’s able to cheat his way to victory!

To place we’ve gone the way of Brad Cox again with #3 Catching Freedom. Coming off of a respectable 4th place effort in the Derby, we expect him to be right there at the finish in this much smaller 8 horse field.

To show we’re going in heavy with the long shot #2 Uncle Heavy. With the worlds greatest jockey Irad Ortiz on board, he should get a great trip and finish in the money.

We could see the derby winner #5 Mystik Dan in the mix as well, however I don’t think he will win this one as he had the benefit of a perfect rail trip in his victory. Maybe throw him in the back end of your trifecta.

For our trifecta we’ll go with:

2,3,9
2,3,5,9
2,3,5,9 total cost $9

My favorite time of the year is finally here! It's Kentucky Derby Week, and I couldn't be more excited. As the temperatures continue to rise, I know that summer is just around the corner. The thrill of the horse races, the fashionable hats, and the delicious mint juleps all contribute to an unforgettable experience. Folks we all know that’s an absolute lie. What the Kentucky Derby is really about, is getting drunk and wagering slightly more money than you’re comfortable losing.

Moving right along we’ll get into the thick of it, I like #17 Fierceness. He won the Florida derby by an unbelievable 13+ lengths. One of the most impressive performances in a derby prep in recent memory. What’s the catch? Post position. Our beloved hero drew the dreaded 17pp. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DERBY WINNER FROM POST 17. However, I think that changes on Saturday. Fierceness is clearly the best horse in the race, if he gets a decent trip he should win it easily.

With Fierceness on top of our ticket it’s time to fill out the rest. We begin with #2 Sierra Leone, likely my top pick under different circumstances. This horse has done it all with wins at Aqueduct, Fairgrounds, and his most impressive win coming in the Bluegrass stakes at Keeneland. Could very well be the best of the rest.

Moving on, things begin to get cloudy. There are probably 10 horses that could fill out the back of your trifecta ticket. One that I really like is #4 Catching Freedom. He failed in the Risen Star and was bested by Track Phantom and Sierra Leone. But, he came back with a big effort in the Louisiana derby to win it. Handicapping is all about finding horses that are improving or you think will improve in the next race. Catching Freedom fits the bill. I would not bet against arguably the best trainer in the sport Brad Cox.

#18 Stronghold, Santa Anita Derby winner. A race that has produced plenty of Kentucky Derby winners. Regardless of post position, if you give me the Santa Anita winner at 35/1 (current odds) I’m putting something on him. Do not exclude.

#19 Resilience another horse that could threaten, he won the Wood Memorial with an impressive speed figure of 104. In fact the only other horse with higher speed figs? Fierceness. So why the long odds? Bad post position, and bad record for Wood Memorial winners. No horse has won the derby after winning the Wood in over 20 years. Good horse, long odds = big payday moving on.

#8 Just A Touch, ah yes. The other Brad Cox horse. Does this guy ever run out of good horses? Seriously. The lightly raced Justify c**t lost the Bluegrass by 1 1/2 lengths, but has impressive speed figs in all three races he’s run. Feels like it’s building up to something, could it be a Kentucky Derby top 3?

#11 Forever Young, an undefeated 5-0 horse in a decent post position. Plus it’s Japanese which rules. What’s not to love right? Wrong, a UAE derby horse has never won the derby and I don’t think it will happen this year. Can he sneak into the back of an exotic ticket? Yes, and that’s why I’ve listed him here

#6 Just Steel, another Justify c**t trained by the legendary Wayne Lukas who has won the second most Kentucky Derby races in history. One thing I’ve learned about Mr. Lukas is you never leave him off your ticket!

Have fun, be safe, and win some money!

RTT is back again for another exciting golf review, where we play a course and give an honest review and rating 1-5. Next on our list is the South Course at City Park, one of two courses on the property. Of the two courses, the South Course is much better and certainly more difficult.

At an astonishing 7,300 yards from the back tees, the South Course is one of the longer courses around. Get used to pulling out the long irons for your approach shots as well as your par 3 tee shots as they all fall in the 170-200+ yard range.

Your tee shots need to be straight and long, or you’re at risk of finding one of the many water hazards lining this layout. Many of your approach shots will have to be aimed for the safe landing areas on the elevated greens as deep bunkers are guarding the pins just waiting to turn your 4 into a 6 or 7.

Bayou Oaks South Course is a beautiful course teeming with local wildlife and majestic oak trees that have been around for centuries. When playing in the afternoon you can catch a glimpse of an illuminated New Orleans CBD on the horizon.

The South course can be quite pricey, with green fees upwards of $100 on the weekend, however you can cut that in half if you wait till after 3pm. At the $90 to $100 price point we feel like Bayou Oaks is too high. The real value is in the sub $60 summer evening rounds.

The bottom line is Bayou Oaks SC is a great course. We enjoyed every minute of our time here. There are several practice greens, and a great range. The clubhouse is top notch as well. If you can manage, try to get out and play during the week as it can be extremely busy at times. We wouldn’t recommend paying full price but rather playing the much cheaper North Course for a bit of practice in the morning, having something from the kitchen then playing the South Course in the evening for the discounted rate.

Rank the Tank is back with RTT Golf Reviews, where we play a round of golf and give our honest review of the course on a scale of 1-5. Next on our list is Belle Terre Country Club, one of two courses located in Laplace, La.

Belle Terre is certainly the more formidable of the two Laplace courses playing 6,849 yards from the back tees with water hazards threatening on nearly every hole. If you’re having trouble keeping your ball straight, this course will make you pay.

The greens at Belle Terre have come a long way and are relatively nice compared to past visits. The grass was a bit long on the greens this weekend, but that can likely be attributed to the weather we had Friday.

The scenery is what you’re looking for when playing a south Louisiana course, oaks, moss, and all sorts of wildlife. Not nearly as much as in the past as hurricanes in the area have taken a toll on many of the trees and surrounding homes. In spite of this the course still maintains much of it’s natural beauty.

The price for a weekend round was roughly $50 which is on par or below the prices of surrounding courses. At this price point we feel that Belle Terre is a great value. We had a great time playing here and will likely be back very soon. So bring your best game, and maybe an extra box of balls you might need them!

Rank the Tank is back with RTT Golf Reviews, where we play a round of golf and give our honest review of the course on a scale of 1-5. First on our list is Riverlands Golf & Country Club, one of two courses located in Laplace, La.

Riverlands is a relatively simple course that can be welcoming to beginners as well as more skilled players. The greens are usually in decent shape, however on our recent visit they were very sandy. The location of the course leaves much to be desired in terms of scenery, but what it lacks in views it makes up for in decent green fees and a newly remodeled clubhouse. The bottom line is, Riverlands isn’t going to make anyone’s top 10 list. But if you and your buddies want to get together and have a fun easygoing round on the weekend at a decent price, Riverlands is the place.
