Its not only about the gutter its about sending the water to the right place.

We installed gutters on a home in Seabrook, NH last week, and the grading of the property made the downspout layout especially important.

Instead of stopping the downspouts right at the foundation, we used longer extensions to carry the stormwater downhill and away from the building. The 3x4 downspouts are able to handle all the water coming off the roof but where does the water do from there?

That is something we look at on every gutter installation. The gutters collect the water, but the downspouts and extensions need to put that water somewhere it can safely drain.

Good gutter work is not just about getting water off the roof. It is about getting it away from the building.

This Seabrook installation is a good example of why we look at the whole property, including the roof, downspouts and ground grading, before deciding how the system should be installed.

The Math of a Flooded Basement
603-410-9719
After every heavy rain, we get calls from homeowners asking the same question.

"My gutters were full. Why did water still end up in my basement?"

Most people assume they need new gutters.

Sometimes they do.

Sometimes the gutters they have are simply too small for the roof above them.

Here's something many homeowners don't know.

A 6-inch seamless gutter holds about 40% more water than a standard 5-inch gutter.

Think about the weather we've been getting in New Hampshire. Heavy summer downpours. Fast snow melt. Strong fall rains. That is a lot of water coming off your roof in a short amount of time.

If the gutter can't handle it, the water spills over the front edge. It lands next to your foundation, washes out mulch and flower beds, stains siding, and can eventually find its way into your basement.

We see it every year.

A lot of homes still have the same 5-inch gutters that were installed decades ago. They were fine for many houses, but today's roofs are often larger, steeper, and collect more water than people realize.

The good news is that replacing everything is not always the answer.

Sometimes a properly sized 6-inch seamless gutter with larger downspouts is all it takes to move the water away from your home.

Here is the part that surprises most homeowners.

A 6-inch gutter does not cost 40 percent more.

In most cases, it only costs a few dollars more per foot.

For something that protects your roof, foundation, landscaping, and basement for the next 25 years or more, that is money well spent.

That is why we say...

More Flow For Your Dough.

Have you noticed your gutters overflowing during a heavy rain even after you cleaned them? Tell us what you're seeing. We are happy to answer your questions.

K-style gutters have a clean, simple profile that follows the roofline and can look a lot like crown molding along the edge of the house. With copper, the gutter becomes part of the overall design rather than something added on afterward.

And there’s a practical reason to choose copper. It’s strong, durable, and has a very long service life. As it ages, the finish changes naturally and becomes part of the character of the home.

Good gutter design should work with the house not take away from it.

09/18/2026

Why K-style gutters work so well with New England architecture.

K-style, or Ogee, gutters are more than a way to move rainwater. On traditional New England homes, the profile can work with the existing fascia, cornice, trim and roofline instead of looking like an attachment.

At gables, K-style gutters can be mitered and returned up the rake, helping maintain the architectural lines of the house.

And when you choose copper K-style, you get that traditional architectural look with a material that naturally changes and develops character over time.

The right gutter isn't just about size and color. The profile should make sense for the building.

Copper K-style gutters have a long history in traditional New England architecture, and they can also be a more affordable option than half-round copper.

When people picture copper gutters, they usually picture half-round.

But that's only one option.

K-style copper gutters can be a very natural fit on traditional New England homes, particularly houses with strong fascia, cornice and exterior trim.

The shaped K-style profile follows those architectural lines and can become part of the roofline rather than looking like an addition.

At gables, K-style gutters can be custom mitered and returned up the rake to follow the existing lines of the house.

There is also a practical reason to consider K-style.

Half-round copper requires specialized hanging hardware. Depending on the job, that can mean brackets, hidden hangers, wedges and other components specifically designed to support the round gutter.

K-style copper can often be installed with a more straightforward hanging system.

So even though copper is a premium material, K-style copper can actually be more affordable to install than half-round copper.

The exact price depends on the gutter size, copper thickness, number of downspouts, corners and miters, roofline complexity, hardware and labor.

And copper doesn't just stay the same color forever. New copper starts bright, then gradually develops darker brown tones and eventually a natural patina. How quickly it changes depends on the environment.

For us, the question isn't simply, "Do you want copper?"

It's which copper profile makes sense for the house, how the water needs to be handled, and how the system should be installed for New England weather.

That's where the experience matters.

Windham NH Gutter Replacement: Why 6-Inch Gutters Made the Difference
New England Gutter Systems recently replaced a gutter system on a home in Windham, New Hampshire, near the water.

The existing 5-inch gutters were fairly new, but they weren't working right. The problem wasn't just the gutter size. They were installed too low and were not under the drip edge.

Water was getting behind the gutters and into the porch area, causing the fascia to rot.

What We Found
The existing 5-inch gutters were installed too low.

The gutters weren't properly installed under the drip edge.

Water was splashing back behind the gutters and onto the fascia.

The porch fascia had water damage and needed replacing.

The existing gutter system wasn't handling the water.

The Fix
Remove the damaged fascia replace with a PVC buildout to hold the new gutters and installed new 6 inch K Style gutters that were right for the house.

Replaced the rotted fascia.

Installed a 2-inch PVC build-out.

Installed new 6-inch seamless gutters.

Positioned the gutters high under the drip edge.

Used the extra capacity of 6-inch gutters to help handle heavy rainfall.

Improved the drainage setup to reduce splashback and water getting behind the gutters.

The PVC fascia build-out also provides better resistance to rot in an area exposed to water.

Why We Recommended 6-Inch Gutters
This Windham project is a good example of why the right gutter size and installation matter.

New Hampshire weather brings heavy rain, snow, and ice. We are seeing more homes where 6-inch gutters make sense, especially when the roof and building need more drainage capacity.

We still install 5-inch gutters when they are the right choice. But for many new installations and replacements, we recommend looking closely at 6-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts.

When 6-Inch Gutters May Be the Better Choice
Larger homes or buildings.

Multiple roof sections draining into one gutter.

Storefronts and commercial buildings.

Homes in the Lakes Region or Seacoast.

Properties near water.

Areas with heavy pine trees and a lot of roof runoff.

Homes that have had overflow or splashback problems.

More capacity can help, but installation still matters. A properly sized gutter that is installed too low or in the wrong position can still cause problems.

Why Do Some Companies Still Install 5-Inch Gutters?
There are good reasons to use 5-inch gutters. They are common, and they work well on many homes.

But not every gutter company can manufacture and install 6-inch gutters.

At New England Gutter Systems, we have machines for both 5-inch and 6-inch seamless gutters. We can recommend the size that makes sense for your home instead of being limited to one option.

Some national companies and franchises use a more standardized approach. A local gutter company that works in New Hampshire understands that homes here deal with different conditions than homes in other parts of the country.

There Is a Difference Between Selling Gutters and Working on Gutters
The person measuring your house should understand more than how to take measurements.

They should know:

How much water the roof will send into the gutter.

Whether 5-inch or 6-inch gutters make sense.

Where the drip edge is and how the gutter should be positioned.

How to prevent water from getting behind the gutter.

What happens when snow, ice, and pine needles affect drainage.

Whether the fascia and roof edge need attention before installation.

A gutter system should be a long-term investment. These Windham homeowners had to replace gutters that were still relatively new because the original installation wasn't working properly.

That is why local experience matters.

We thought you'd like to see what happens when we bring our gutter machine to your house to build your Seamless Gutters.
The machine forms the aluminum into a continuous length of gutter right on site. We measure each section to fit the house, then cut it to the exact length needed. It’s a pretty simple process, but there’s a lot that goes into getting the gutters to fit correctly.
