When we ‘adopted’ Manchester United as our official favorite pro sports franchise back on Jan. 1, they were in sixth place in the Premier League. Well, we brought good fortune as in the 19 games since then they won 12, tied 5 and lost only twice -- finishing the season in third place. That means they get to play in the prestigious UEFA Champions League next year, bringing a massive financial windfall and being better positioned to attract top talent, because the best players want to play against the best competition. Speaking of best players, Bruno Fernandez was named the Premier League Player of the Season. Bruno had 9 goals and a record-setting 21 assists and will now lead Portugal in World Cup play. As many as 12 other Red Devils will also be joining their national teams for the World Cup, which starts June 11, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The next Premier League season begins Aug. 22 and in the meantime players will come and go during the July transfer window, plus the Red Devils will play a series of friendlies -- including one on August 8 against powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.
