HOW TO CURE CONCRETE IN COLD WEATHER
Here is advice for curing concrete in freezing temperatures:
Remember the definition: If the air is below or expected to go below 40°F, then use cold weather techniques.
Concrete in cold weather absolutely does need to be cured—the surface can dry out even faster than in warm weather, if the concrete is warmer than the air.
When finishing concrete in cold weather, you still need to wait for all the bleed water to evaporate. Bleed water is basically the concrete particles settling (like mud in a stirred up pond) and squeezing out all the extra water. If you finish that water into the surface, you increase the water-cement ratio and get weak surface concrete. Since the concrete is setting more slowly in the cold, bleeding starts later, lasts longer, and you can get more bleed water. You can try getting it off with squeegees or vacuums--or you can wait.
Cure concrete in cold weather without additional water; adding water will keep the concrete saturated so that freezing will damage it even after it reaches 500 psi compressive strength. Learn more about curing concrete.
Concrete additives, like a non-chloride accelerator, may reduce or elimante the need for protection and heating of concrete in cold climates.

ENGINEERS: Are you responsible for ensuring areas with erosion and soil instabilities are monitored for safety? Learn how our revolutionary ShapeArray technology can help mitigate risk ==> https://measurand.com/project-profiles/shapearray-data-alerted-state-authorities-to-protect-the-public-from-landsl
In 2003, a massive landslide in downtown Crookston caused significant property damage, forcing the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to seek out newer and better monitoring solutions. MnDOT sought out Measurand’s ShapeArray. Five ShapeArrays were installed at two sites with the most soil instability. In Sept. 2008, ShapeArray data revealed that soil movements were deeper than anticipated and the deformation rate was increasing. MnDOT responded by diverting traffic away from the instability.
Ten days later, a landslide occurred, dropping a 150-meter section of the highway three meters. The slide continued over several days, but because MnDOT decided to use the ShapeArray, engineers were able to preemptively ensure that no members of the public were hurt during the slide.

Construction engineering:
Construction engineering is a professional discipline that deals with the designing, planning, construction, and management of infrastructures such as roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, railroads, facilities, buildings, dams, utilities and other projects. Construction engineering is considered a professional sub-practice area of Civil engineering.
Construction technology is a related field that deals more with the practical aspects of projects. Construction technologists or construction technicians learn some of the design aspects similar to civil engineers and some of the project site management aspects similar to construction managers. These technicians are unique such that they are a cross between civil engineers and construction managers.
At the educational level, civil engineering students concentrate primarily on the design work, which is more analytical, gearing them toward a career as a design professional. This essentially requires them to take a multitude of challenging engineering science and design courses as part of obtaining a 4 year accredited degree. Also, education for construction managers is primarily focused on construction procedures, methods, costs, schedules, and personnel management. Their primary concern is to deliver a project on time, within budget, and of the desired quality.
The difference between a construction technologist and a civil engineer is that civil engineering is an engineering discipline. Construction technology students take basic design courses as well as construction management courses. This allows them to understand both basic design functions as well as the building requirements needed to design and build today's infrastructures.
The Engineering Design Process
To solve engineering problems, engineers follow a series of steps called the “Engineering Design Process.”
A Five-Step Process
Because the EiE Project serves young children, we’ve created a simple Engineering Design Process (EDP) to guide students through our engineering design challenges. This EDP has just five steps and uses terms children can understand.
ASK: What is the problem? How have others approached it? What are your constraints?
IMAGINE: What are some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one.
PLAN: Draw a diagram. Make lists of materials you will need.
CREATE: Follow your plan and create something. Test it out!
IMPROVE: What works? What doesn't? What could work better? Modify your design to make it better.
Test it out!
It’s important to note that the EDP is flexible. There are as many variations of the model as there are engineers. With EiE, students work through all five steps, but in real life, engineers often work on just one or two steps, then pass their work to another team.
Note that the EDP is a cycle—there’s no official start or end point. You can begin at any step, focus on just one step, move back and forth between steps, or repeat the cycle. For example, after you improve your design once, you may want to begin all over again to refine your technology. You can use the EDP again and again!
