Single Point Cane

The most lightweight, small, and simple assistive device.
It improves safety and balance compared to walking with no assistive device.
The downside is this is the least stable assistive device for walking.

Take your furry friend to the beach, a hike, or just to the dog park to celebrate the International Dog Day! 🐶

Quad Cane

This device also can stand upright without support, has a larger base of support than the standard cane, and it allows for more weight to be put through the arm/hand.

Hemi-Walker

The Hemi-Walker is the most stable option for patients without functional use of one arm/hand.
This device can stand upright without support, has a larger base of support, and easily folds together for storage.
The only downside is that it's bulky and heavy.

Rollator

This device allows the fastest walking speed.
It has a seat for resting breaks, a basket for carrying items, and has breaks on handles.
This is the least stable full walker since it has wheels on all four legs. And it does not allow for very much weight to be pushed through the hands/arms.

The rollator is ONLY for patients who:
👉Need an immediate place for sitting break
👉Have good balance without needing to lean his/her weight onto the walker.

Rolling Walker

This allows for a faster walking speed for the user and easier to move.
There are tennis balls or glides on the back legs for easier sliding.
This assistive device does not need to pick up the back legs when walking since it just slides.
The downfall of this device is that the wheels can roll out from under the patient if all four legs are not in contact with the ground/floor.

Standard Walker

This is the most stable Assistive Device.
No rolling out from under the patient.
Allows for more weight to be pushed through arms/hands, unweighting legs.
Allows a slower walking speed for the user.

There are essential things we need to consider before using assistive devices. The following are some of the most common things to consider:

1. The assistive device should be appropriate to the user's needs.
2. Assistive devices should be selected & fitted by a professional (e.g., a physical therapist)
3. The caregiver must be aware of the client's abilities & disabilities.
4. The caregiver must be knowledgeable about the use of the assistive device.
5. The caregiver must provide safety for the client through proper guarding & instructions during activities where assistive devices are used.

These will be discussed further on the following posts. For more information, refer to: https://training.mmlearn.org/blog/how-to-use-assistive-devices-for-seniors-video-included
