For the second year in a row, local artist Ksenia Kozhenkova of AAURA ART Studio has generously donated her time and incredible talent to create a one-of-a-kind piece highlighting one of our adoptable dogs.

Last year, Ksenia created a stunning painting of Ophelia on stretched canvas. Her artwork helped raise much-needed funding through our silent auction, and shortly afterward, Ophelia found the forever home she had been waiting for.

This year, Ksenia has chosen to shine a spotlight on a dog who has been waiting far, far too long: Mateo.

As Mateo reaches his 1,260th day in our care, Ksenia has captured his spirit in an incredible original piece of art, helping us tell the story of a dog who deserves so much more than a life spent waiting.

And now, Mateo’s original artwork will be featured in our Haute Howloween silent auction!

🗓️ Bidding opens one week before Haute Howloween and closes October 31st.

You do not have to be present to win, but winners must arrange for pickup.

Sometimes, a little more room can make a world of difference. 🐾

We recently upgraded our kennel facility with two brand-new, large play yards, giving our dogs the space they need to run, play, explore, and—most importantly—just be dogs.

And we’re already seeing the difference.

Dogs who once paced the fence line are now running, playing, and settling in to relax. We’re seeing more moments of calm, more natural behaviors, and happier pups enjoying the freedom to stretch their legs and simply enjoy their day.

These changes are possible because of you—our incredible donors and community partners who continue to invest in the well-being of the animals in our care.

A special thank-you to GoodCharlie Energy for helping make this possible. Thank you for being part of their journey.

💔 **MANCHAS NEEDED HELP — AND WE COULDN’T LOOK AWAY.**

Five days ago, an independent rescuer found Manchas on the streets. He was clearly struggling. His p***s was **severely enlarged and swollen**, and he was also limping badly on one of his rear legs.

We knew he couldn’t stay out there.

Today, Manchas was finally picked up and taken straight to Vergi 24/7

We have more questions than answers. We don't know what is causing the extreme swelling. We don't know what is happening with his leg. And we don't know what his ending will be.

But we knew we couldn't leave him on the streets to suffer.

Once Manchas arrived at VERGI the veterinarian told us: “I have been practicing for 22 years and I have never seen anything like this before.”

And despite everything he has endured, Manchas showed just how sweet and scared he really is. His transporter told us: “I was lifting him and manhandling him to get him on the stretcher since he did panic pancake. No snarling, no growling.”

💔 Imagine being in that much discomfort, frightened and confused, and still not trying to hurt anyone.

We don't know what Manchas' diagnosis will be. We don't know what treatment he will need. We don't know how long his recovery will take.

**But we do know he deserved the chance to find out.**

He is finally off the streets and receiving medical care. Now we need your help.

🙏 **Please consider donating toward Manchas' emergency veterinary care.** Diagnostics, treatment, hospitalization, medications and whatever comes next will all add up quickly.

Even $5, $10 or $25 can make a difference. And if you can't donate, **please share Manchas' story.

❤️ We couldn't let him suffer one more day.

**We don't know what Manchas' ending will be yet. But today, we changed his story.**

🐾 **Please help us give Manchas the chance he deserves.**

Adoption Update #26, Slim Shady!

While out on our street-feeding route, Slim Shady ran directly in front of our volunteer’s vehicle. It was clear he was looking for help, and when our volunteers stopped, nearby residents told them that Slim had been dumped that very morning.

He was already in danger. With packs of stray dogs roaming the area, residents feared Slim would be attacked or struck by a vehicle within the day.

The problem? We didn’t have a kennel open.

So, rather than leave him behind, our volunteers opened their home to him and agreed to foster Slim until we had space.

With a safe place to sleep, regular meals, and plenty of love, Slim began to put on some much-needed weight. As Slim began to grow into his ears, a wonderful local couple reached out to meet him. Still grieving the loss of their senior dog, many serendipitous moments came together to bring Slim into their lives. After one meeting, they knew they were ready to open their hearts and home in honor of the love they had lost.

Now named Ghost (in the Machine), after their favorite hometown IPA by Parish Brewing Company, we couldn’t be happier for how his story turned out.

Happy tails, Ghost. You are finally home. 🐾

Adoption Update #25, Mama Blue!

Mama Blue was found living on the scorching pavement of a Houston tire shop, trying to care for her puppies in the same parking lot where Thatcher and Rubble were rescued. She had already lost all but two of her babies by the time we found her.

Her two surviving puppies were immediately rushed into treatment for parvo, while Mama Blue began the long road to recovery herself. She completed her heartworm treatment, cared for her babies, and somehow kept going through it all.

Eventually, as her two puppies made their way into loving homes, Mama Blue was ready for her next chapter too. A chapter that took her north to Utah.

And now, she has something she never had in Houston.

A family of her own.

Her adopters are officially calling her Lulu, or “Lu,” short for Honolulu. Since their cats are named Hilo and Kona, they decided to keep the Hawaiian theme going — and we think Lulu is the perfect name for her new beginning.

Welcome home sweet girl 🌺

Cromwell Update!

On August 28th, Cromwell was rushed from the streets to Vergi 24/7 after being hit by a car. He arrived with a deep laceration to his front paw that had become severely infected. Despite everyone’s efforts to save it, Cromwell ultimately needed to have one of his toes amputated.

Since then, it has been a long road of bandage changes, bloodwork, veterinary visits, rest, recovery, and a whole lot of patience on his part.

But now, we’re finally getting glimpses of the playful, goofy dog hiding underneath all those bandages and medical appointments.

Now he needs the next piece of his recovery: a local foster home.

Cromwell needs a safe, comfortable place where he can continue healing while his paw finishes recovering. A foster will give him the chance to decompress, learn what it feels like to be safe, and show us even more of the happy, playful dog we know is in there.

Cromwell has already fought so hard to get here. Now he just needs someone willing to walk the rest of the road with him.

If you can foster Cromwell locally in Houston while he continues to heal, please apply through the link below!

Two More Texas Dogs are Headed North Today! 🚐

Today, Shams and Elio are leaving Houston behind and making the journey to our incredible northern rescue partner, Buddy Dog Humane Society in Massachusetts.

Their stories started in very different places, but both ended with the same thing: someone choosing not to leave them behind.

🐾 Shams was found living on the porch of an abandoned home — the very same property where Elise and her puppies were rescued. Thankfully, volunteers found her, brought her to safety, and gave her the chance to become more than just another dog surviving on the streets.

☀️ Elio was found nearby at a Houston park, suffering from heat exhaustion and desperately needing help. At just around 20 pounds, she was alone, vulnerable, and trying to survive the Texas heat. Today, instead of facing another day on the streets, she’s headed toward a completely different future.

During their time in our care, Shams taught our long term resident, Hondo, how to be a puppy again. In his first ever playgroup pairing, we watched him bounce, roll, and open up his world of making new friends. Today, Shams and Elio are officially Massachusetts-bound, but not before helping Hondo become even more adoptable.

We are so grateful to Buddy Dog Humane Society for opening their doors to these Texas dogs and giving them the opportunity to find the families they have been waiting for.

Two more dogs out of Houston. Two more lives changed. Two more chances at forever.

Safe travels, Shams and Elio. Your next chapter starts today.

New intake headed to Vergi 24/7 .
Graphic photo in comments

Enya was found in a park hiding in the play equipment. Her foot has a large gash that needs to be addressed. She had ants crawling all over her body and wound.

We are unsure how this happened or if she has any other trauma we cannot see.

Please consider donating for her emergency visit.
