Boss Manufacturing Plant Greenville Alabama. Demolition and Soil Excavation.
It was built at a cost of $100,000 by Riley Brothers, local contractors in 1941. At the time, it was an impressive example of a modern industrial mill equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system. It was largely made possible by donations from the businesses of the city and from its citizens.
The Merrimac Hat Corporation came to Greenville in 1941. The Greenville factory became one of the largest wool hat and hat body producing plants in the country. The company ceased operation in 1950.
In 1951, the Rigel Textile Corporation came to town and refit the building to make it ready to manufacture work gloves. Billed as the largest work glove factory in the world, Rigel continued operating until 1961 when the Boss Manufacturing Company took over. Boss closed in 2000.
At times these companies employed up to 800 people from Butler County and surrounding areas.
They were an integral part of the local economy and the community.
