How about paid sick leave, now? • Wisconsin Examiner 07/31/2026

Even our state's "labor department" is trying to avoid paying worker benefits by hiring "temps". The Dept. of Workforce Development just posted an LTE job to do a nursing survey required by law. See wisc.jobs. Zero paid sick days for the person compiling health data. It's a contradiction, right? Why is our state creating no-benefit jobs? Posting old article here with a nice picture that is relevant.

The WI Civil Service System allows workers to do their jobs even if it will displease a powerful corporation. In this case, an inspector at the state Dept. of Health Services (DHS) investigated and drafted a citation of ProHealth Care Regency Senior Communities, New Berlin (an Assisted Living center) for evicting a 97 year old without following state rules back in 2021. Although DHS proceeded to cite the company, then reversed their decision with no explanation, at least the frontline public worker did her job and held the corporation accountable to the extent she could.

Today we're excited to celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest annual Black freedom celebration in the US. On this day in 1865, Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed the end of slavery to individuals in Galveston, Texas.

Civil Service protects the public. We need to reverse these erosions of Civil Service.

On Wednesday the White House moved to strip civil service protections from about 8,000 federal workers, including many working at public health agencies.

The executive order effectively transforms these jobs—which include “epidemiologist,” “health scientist” and “toxicologist”—into “at-will” positions, meaning people in such roles can be readily fired without cause. http://spklr.io/6049EMFWx

Civil Service is a basic building block of clean government and democracy. Stop shifting jobs from Civil Service to appointees and at-will employment. It's a recipe for corruption.
