K-9 Corps? What an exciting idea! On this day in 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army began training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program. With this program in place, over one million dogs served on both sides during WWI. Their main job was to carry messages through the trenches and provide psychological comfort to the soldiers.

Eight days after his inauguration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave his first national radio address from the White House. His speech came at the lowest point during the Great Depression. The nation was worried and living in fear. Roosevelt's speech was to calm those fears and to inspire confidence in leadership.
2009 American hedge-fund investment manager Bernie Madoff pled guilty to various crimes related to his operation of a Ponzi scheme that was one of the largest in the world; he was sentenced to 150 years in prison.
On this day in 2011, an earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan, causing widespread damage in the country and triggering a devastating tsunami that instigated a major nuclear accident.

Many delegates gathered in Montgomery, Alabama, to adopt the Permanent Constitution of the Confederate States of America. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgie, Louisiana, and Texas adopted this Constitution because of its more forceful laws.
On this day in 1969 James Earl Ray pled guilty to murdering American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

The American classic "Barbie" made her debut. Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the U.S. with adult feathers. Despite the criticism "Barbie" received, sales continued to soar and topped one billion dollars annually by 1993. Today, "Barbie" is sold all over the world and has become a global icon.
2014 During a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared, prompting a massive search effort that was finally called off in early 2017.
