One of the most recognizable traditions at a military funeral is the presentation of the American flag to a loved one's family.
But have you ever wondered why?
The practice dates back generations and serves as a symbol of gratitude for a person's service and sacrifice to our country. During a military funeral, the flag is carefully folded into a triangle, representing honor, duty, and remembrance. It is then presented to the next of kin as a lasting keepsake and a tangible expression of a grateful nation's appreciation.
Not everyone is eligible to receive a burial flag. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides burial flags for eligible veterans and certain members of the Armed Forces. The flag is typically draped over the casket or accompanies an urn during services before being presented to the family.
For many families, the flag becomes a treasured reminder of a loved one's commitment to serving something greater than themselves.

Green burials aren’t just a trend in Madison; they reflect how this community lives and what it values.
Respect for the earth
A desire for simplicity
A deeper connection to nature
They also invite something many families don’t expect: a more personal, shared experience. Walking the land together, participating in the burial, and creating space for connection and healing.
It’s a different kind of goodbye, one that stays with you.

Trying something unfamiliar during a time of loss can feel overwhelming.
Many families say what made the difference was having someone guide them with care and clarity.
“Brenda made everything feel less scary. She explained each part of the process in a way that helped us make decisions with confidence.”
Having the right support can turn uncertainty into peace of mind.

Have you ever visited a place that just felt different?
Families who choose green burial often share that feeling when they step into Natural Path Sanctuary in Verona. Prairie grasses, oak trees, birdsong, and winding paths create a space that feels alive and peaceful.
One family told us, “This felt like bringing him back home.”
It’s one of the reasons green burials are becoming such a meaningful choice in Madison.

Some days are meant for gathering.
Others are meant for remembering.
Today, we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage, their sacrifice, and the families who continue to carry their memory.
However you spend today, we invite you to pause and reflect.
Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Memorial Day.

What if a final farewell could feel more like coming home?
Across Madison, more families are choosing green burials, a natural, meaningful way to honor their loved ones while staying connected to the land that shaped their lives.
“There is something deeply peaceful about returning a person to the land… You can almost feel the stress lift from their shoulders.”
– Brenda Emerson, Green Burial Specialist
This isn’t just about sustainability. It’s about creating a goodbye that feels grounded, personal, and true.

Is there a teacher who left an impression on you? Have you ever thought of looking them up?
As we acknowledge Teacher Appreciation Week, this is a great opportunity to bring those memories to life. Spend some time reflecting on the impact they made on you.
And if they're still here, what if you reached out and sent them a note of appreciation? You may be surprised to find them on Facebook. If so, reach out. Share a memory and an acknowledgement. And if those teachers are no longer with us, take some time to reflect on what they taught you and who you are today because of their influence. A simple reflection and note go a long way.
To all of our teachers, thank you for the impact you create daily.
