I remember seeing this movie, Yes, Giorgio, starring Pavarotti and Kathryn Harrold back in 1982. It wasn't really all that good but one thing has always stuck with me... I think it might be the best recording of him singing Nessun dorma ever; and there are certainly many, many recordings of him singing this famous aria. The length that he holds the final two notes is astounding. In other recordings he holds those same two notes for a good long time ... but nothing like in this film recording. Does anyone else remember this film? Nothing like dating yourself. :-)

All I can say is ... Wow! From the point of view of a soprano (me) who NEVER had the "whistle range" ... even as a child ... this blows my mind. So amazing to hear such control in this extreme range.

I think many of you are fans of Aaron Tveit. Me too! He certainly is a reigning broadway contemporary tenor. In this live performance of Bernstein's "Maria", although we can still hear his signature contemporary sound ... we also are able to hear glimpses of his ability to add more head space and a lyrical sound on the top. It can be done people! Not everything has to be screamed at the top. 🙂

I once read that Bernstein was often displeased with the sopranos that sang this aria from his work, Candide, because he wanted them all to sound more like they were laughing than singing staccati, including Barbara Cook (the original). I like watching Berstein's face as we turns from the podium every now and then to glance at June Anderson sing this very challenging aria. What do you think? Does he like it or not? I personally think she is amazing at the calisthenics that it takes to pull off this aria. But what do I know?! This was never in my repertoire ... and I didn't write it. LOL!

Not sure if I have been living under a rock or just not in the right place for this to come across my path. I learned of this artist while watching an interview with Hans Zimmer talking about the score for Dune. Mind blowing is all I can say!
