Iron Maiden tribute

07/23/2019

Today (7/23/2019) marks the 20th anniversary of my absolute favorite time seeing Iron Maiden - that special day in Milwaukee inside the scorching hot, all too familiar Eagles Ballroom. Before my pilgrimage began, my friends and I decided to get a bunch of plain t-shirts and markers and make our own Iron Maiden shirts. I came up with my "I Heart Maiden" shirt which consisted of a big red heart with Eddie's face smiling inside. Little did I know that by the end of the gig, it looked like I had just been shot. By the time Monster Magnet took the stage, it already felt like a sauna. Still very tolerable to us, because we were all getting ready to witness Iron Maiden starting back on their road to glory. I remember the singer of Monster Magnet finally broke his groovy, psychedelic dirtball posture and said something like "godamn it's hot in here, aaahhhhhh!!!", which made me a fan, ironically (the dancing was incredible, too). But, when Iron Maiden finally hit the stage, it must have been in the 120's. Humidity soared, tempers flared, trouble was made - someone chucked a cup on stage and Bruce quit singing Wrathchild to cuss the guy out, saying something like "I'll s*t down your fcking throat" which was very audible in this more intimate setting. After the song, he challenged anyone to a fight after the gig if they wanted to throw something on stage, causing a warrior-like cheer from the crowd Shortly after I found a crutch on the ground that I ended up shaking around with pure joy that I might have tossed up there had I not seen that. Anyway - despite the heat, the band was firing on all cylinders. It really was magical the way Adrian just finished his solo for The Evil That Men Do where he and the band nodded at each other in agreement that he just nailed it. Just a beautiful moment of chemistry for his re-entry. During Hallowed Be Thy Name, I was so hot, I asked for a cup of ice to blow on my face to cool down and saw dozens of others doing the same thing, but beyond that I couldn't care less if it was like 140 degrees in the place, It was the hottest temperature I have ever withstood and I was having the time of my life. They killed it, Not to my knowledge at the time, the whole show got filmed. Years later I heard that all the stage crew and bands wanted to cancel the gig because it was too hot, but Bruce was the one that said that this is the return of Iron Maiden and the show will go on. If that's what it takes.....-Brian
