Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

That's why the new Men's Shelter was designed specifically to meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness. This purpose-built facility reflects years of planning and a commitment to creating a safer, more welcoming environment for shelter guests.

The shelter features five separate sleeping pods, creating smaller sleeping communities rather than one large dormitory space. This design helps foster a greater sense of comfort, safety, and belonging for guests. Shelter case manager Kaylee and guest Aaron are excited for the opening of the new shelter and the thoughtfulness given to each area of the shelter.

Recognizing the diverse needs of those we serve, one sleeping pod is located on the first floor to better accommodate guests with mobility challenges and provide easier access to shelter services.

The new shelter is more than a building—it's an investment in people. By creating a space designed with dignity, accessibility, and support in mind, we hope to provide guests with a strong foundation as they work toward stability and permanent housing.

This past week, they came to our Safe Haven site and talked to folks about their experiences as they continue to research the impact of poverty on the field of communication. 🏠 More Than a Bed

The new Bartillon Men's Shelter is about more than providing a place to sleep.

When the shelter opens September 1st, guests will have access to overnight shelter along with housing-focused case management and support services designed to help individuals move toward stability and permanent housing.

Porchlight staff will work with guests to identify goals, navigate resources, address barriers to housing, and connect with community services that can support their next steps.

As we look to the future, we hope to expand access to additional daytime services that will further strengthen the support available to shelter guests.

Every person's path is different, but having a safe place to stay and access to housing-focused support can make a meaningful difference.

🏗️ A Vision Becoming Reality

Later this summer, The City of Madison will open Madison's new purpose-built Men's Shelter. Porchlight is thrilled to be the selected operator.

This milestone represents years of collaboration between Porchlight, the City of Madison, Dane County, Shelter Friends of Dane County, community partners, donors, volunteers, and advocates who believe everyone deserves a safe place to stay and a pathway to permanent housing.

For the past five years, our staff and Board of Directors have worked tirelessly to help bring this vision to life. We are excited to welcome guests into a space designed to provide safety, dignity, and access to the resources that can help individuals move toward housing stability.

Over the coming weeks, we'll share more about the shelter, the services that will be available, and the impact we hope it will have for our community.
