Bloom Bake Shop

Tomorrow (Tuesday), both Bloom Bake Shop locations will be closed as part of our bakery team continues to move into our new production space down the block and the other half reorganizes our current space.

This move has been more than a year in the making, and we’re so excited for what it means, not just for our team, but for all of you. More space will allow us to continue growing, expanding our offerings, and making your Bloom experience even better.

We’ll be back to baking, brewing coffee, and welcoming you on Wednesday.

Like many of you, I’ve spent the past few days thinking about our community. The shooting of Corey Ruiz has left many people grieving, angry, heartbroken, and searching for answers. I certainly don’t have those answers. I only know that something feels deeply broken, and moments like this remind me how connected we all are to one another.

This week has brought me back to the summer of 2020 and the murder of George Floyd. I remember the relentless heat, the uncertainty, and our team loading sandwiches into our cars to deliver to people gathered downtown. We partnered with Freedom, Inc. because they were already doing work in our community that we believed mattered. We weren’t there to lead, and we certainly didn’t have answers. We simply believed that feeding people was one small way we could care for our neighbors.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize something important. I can’t pretend to know what it feels like to move through the world as a Black person, and I won’t. But I can listen. I can learn. And I can choose how I use this business we’ve built. Businesses make choices every day about where they invest their time, resources, and attention. Those choices are one way we show what we value. I hope you’ll always know ours are rooted in a simple desire to be good neighbors and care for the community we all share.

Our role isn’t to have the right words every time our community hurts. Our role is simply to keep showing up. To welcome people in. To nourish them. To create a place where people are met with kindness and hospitality. Those things don’t fix what is broken, but I believe they still matter.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with every choice we make, and that’s okay. But I do hope you’ll always know why we make them. We’ll keep listening, learning, caring for the people around us, and using this business in ways that reflect the values we believe matter.

First... how are you? Are you taking care of yourself?
It feels a little crazy out there these days. The smoke. The heat. And then, of course, life. Some days it just feels like the world is asking a little more of all of us.

Last night at Lallande, one of our team members shared her stress in looking for a new job in Chicago, worried she might not find one. I found myself saying, “You know what the stressful times are for? They’re what make us appreciate the joyful times. If life was one smooth road, would we ever really recognize how beautiful the good moments are when they arrive?” Turns out, those words were exactly what I needed this morning.

I woke up to a call from Mark at the bakery. One of our delivery drivers forgot to secure the speed racks before turning a corner, every pastry headed to Northstreet ended up on the floor of the van. My first thought was exactly what you’d expect. Oh my gosh, we can’t open Northstreet. We are going to disappoint our customers. But that feeling only lasted a minute.

Almost immediately my mind went somewhere else. What if the driver had tried to save the racks and overcorrected? What if they had been hurt? What if someone else had been hurt too? Suddenly, the pastries didn’t seem nearly as important. I was just grateful everyone was okay.

To our Northstreet neighbors, I’m truly sorry we had to close today. Thank you for your grace and understanding.

Then we had to think about the weekend. The Monroe Street Farmers’ Market is one of my favorite parts of summer, but I kept asking myself, “How can I ask my team to stand outside for eight hours in this heat and smoke?” We made the difficult decision not to be there this Sunday because keeping our team safe simply felt like the right thing to do.

Maybe that’s what difficult weeks are really for: to remind us what matters. To keep people at the center of our decisions and appreciate the ordinary days when everything quietly goes right.

The fireworks are over, but the weekend certainly isn’t. ☀️

Our Monroe Street bakery, Northstreet location, and our sweet little bus at the Monroe Street Farmers' Market are all stocked with flaky pastries, fresh bread, sandwiches, coffee, and plenty of reasons to linger a little longer. ❤️

All of our locations are closed today so our beloved team can spend the holiday however they choose, with family, friends, on the lake, at a picnic, or simply doing a whole lot of nothing. ❤️

Since we can’t do much about the weather, we’ll just keep baking things that make hot summer days a little better.

Fresh lemon tarts topped with mascarpone whip and beautiful Wisconsin strawberries, our annual firework sugar cookies have returned, and the bakery cases are brimming with buttery pastries, fresh bread, and picnic-worthy sandwiches.

Whether you’re headed to the lake, the pool, a backyard barbecue, or simply looking for an excuse to step outside of the heat, we’d love to see you.
